Yes, there's room for up to 100 new Village Houses just off Power Station beach over the next number of years. That's why they cut down the mature forest and blocked off the former forest path short cut to the beach.

It's already zoned for housing but owned by quite a number of people, so it'll take time to get the permissions, financing and building, probably resulting in another unplanned, quite chaotic warren of houses, like the neighbouring villages like Wang Long and Sha Po.

HK Electric just replied to my enquiry about these cable works:

"We are carrying out network enhancement work outside East gate of Lamma Power Station in phases with 600 meters of cables to be laid.
We have just completed the first section of cable laying work (of around 100 meters of communication and high voltage cable) and will arrange to have the cable drums removed within next week, to be followed by site reinstatement of the relevant section.
Four other sections of work are being planned and will take about six months to complete."

Replies from HK Electric to some of my questions:

"The network enhancement work outside east gate of Lamma Power Station, a total of 600 meters of power cables will be laid in phases and we have just completed the first phase of around 100 meters.

The communication cables are used for HK Electric’s network enhancement purpose and not related to other companies, like HGC.

It is our pleasure to arrange visit to Lamma Power Station for Lammaites. However, due to the heavy visit schedule, we would like to propose it be held on either 14 or 15 Aug 2012. I'll send you the visit itinerary upon receiving your confirmation."

Email me which date you'd prefer. I'll only collect registrations much closer to the actual date, as this is 4 months away.

What I don't understand about the zoning for 100 houses is that only the son of an indegenous person is allowed to build a house on their plot of land. Surely there cannot be 100 sons from that area of Lamma??!! So why has permission to build 100 houses been given?

I just received this more detailed explanation from HK Electric, after asking them to verify my statement in the Lamma-zine:
"Did you know that all the electric power for Lamma doesn't come from our Power Station directly, but does a round trip to HK Island first?"

HK Electric:
"Electricity generated at Lamma Power Station is transmitted to Hong Kong Island via 275kV submarine cables and gets transformed down to distribution voltage at 22kV and 11kV, i.e. just 4-8% the original voltage.
The 11kV and 22kV systems are used to distribute electricity to all of HK Island, including Lamma.
On Lamma Island, the 11kV voltage which is fed from HK Island via submarine cables is further stepped down to 380V 3-phase or 220V single-phase via transformers."
