I just heard on the radio that the Tourist Authority are planning a 'fisherman's wharf ' attraction in Aberdeen, saying they want to develop tourism in Aberdeen, Stanley and Lamma ... with the provision of waterbus tours between the three places.

More stress on the island.

At least that would relieve some stress on Repulse Bay Road and Stanley Gap Road.

I don't see why Stanley is a tourist attraction. It's quite boring to me. Are things there really that cheap?

I would imagine it is Sok Kwu Wan that they have in mind.

Well, yes, most of the many planned developments are in Sok Kwu Wan, where most of the $2 BILLION dollars (much of it from the Mainland) will be invested by Bobby Li's company who has been buying up all available land down there. Lammarina is only the first small step in his Lamma development plans.

The Waterbus tours and the Aberdeen Fisherman's Wharf, hotel and "entertainment centre" in Aberdeen are only the beginning and there seem to be quite a few ideas for new tourist attractions on Lamma Island, connected by Waterbus to Aberdeen.

I've been researching a bit recently and the size and extent of the plans is pretty staggering... Loads of more tour groups might be expected in our village and on the route to and from Sok Kwu Wan.

But not much worry for Yung Shue Wan, as most of the plans center around Sok Kwu Wan, Mo Tat Wan and even further south.

I don't think think they can build further things in Aberdeen as land is very limited there. Plans for hotels in Wong Chuk Hang is there though. I think it will all happen as the same time as the redevelopment of Wong Chuk Hang Estate, to coincide with the development of Fishmen's Pier and redevelopment of Ocean Park.

Recently, suggestions were made at a Southern District Council meeting recommending an impose on the height of new buildings to be constructed in the Wong Chuk Hang commercial district.

Given the enormous resources and influence of the Li empire (here in Vancouver too!), I wonder how long it will be until a bridge is built from Waterfall Bay to Pak Kok to service the real estate developments?? ... One shudders at the thought. Certainly a terrible investment but quite an engineering feat!

The East lamma Chanel is a major waterway where big container vessels go in and out of the habour. A tunnel or a bridge across it would be extremely unlikely.

Yet another big advantage to living on Lamma! (Hopefully you noted the 'tongue-in-cheek' thingy)

And besides, after everyone drove over to Lamma where would they park? Oh, I forgot, Bobby Li could charge for parking

I thought tunnels' went under not over. Forgive me if I'm wrong but this 'Plan' has been bandied about for years.

The main issue is the new class of 'supertanker' which has such a deep draft that the tunnels would make the channel too shallow. As with the MTR tunnels they would have to be placed on the sea bed as opposed to actually underground as most people presume.
Should the Lamma channel, which is the busiest shipping lane in the world, become un-navigable Hong Kong would lose much of its advantage and lose more business to Southern China and Shanghai.
