UNICEF - Red Packet Promotion 2007

When you are enjoying the festive celebration with your families and friends, we would like to remind you the lives of other families in China with a very different story. UNICEF needs your help to extend our joy and wishes to the children living in the remote areas in China.

The Story of Dan

“I’m Dan. The place where I live is quite poor. People don’t have much to eat. Even if some families may have livestock at home, they seldom kill and eat them. Because to most of the people, it is the only asset they have. And very often, they will sell the eggs in the market to earn a living.”

“Last year, my mom cooked an egg for me on my birthday. It was indeed a very precious gift. But when my little sister knew it, she cried and wanted one also. We two at last fought over this trifling matter. I knew Mom was really upset by the situation and she shouted at sister. “Your brother is trying to study hard and strive for a brighter future for the whole family! But you this little girl always quarrels with your brother!” My sister cried even louder. When she was running out of the door, she stumbled on the doorsill carelessly and got her teeth broken. I was so sorry. Since then, I promised myself I had to earn more money and let sister eats everything she wants.”

Despite the rapid growth of economy and improved living environment, there are still millions of children in China whose basic needs are unmet. High infant mortality rates, high prevalence of malnutrition and stunting, lack of education opportunities for children are still witnessed in some poor areas in the inland and mountainous regions.

UNICEF’s supported programme, the “Local Planning and Action for Children” aims at improving the well being of women and children and enhancing their rights. Through the programme “Local Planning and Action for Children (LPAC)”, UNICEF provides small loans to village people in the poor rural area and trains these people with income-generation skills. All these empower the people to depend on their own and continue to make sustained investment. We believe it is the only way to break the cycle of poverty.

Hong Kong Committee for UNICEF is going to hold the Red Packet Charity Sales on 20-21 & 27-28 January 2006. All the proceeds from the charity sales will go to the “Local Planning & Action for Children in China” (LPAC) program. Show your support by visiting our sales booths, or become our volunteers in making a very special Chinese New Year for the children in China. For this year, the red packets are available at $10 per pack and each pack comes in 10 pieces.
