Submitted by Dr. Martin Williams of www.hkoutdoors.com, via Katie Flowers:

Dear friends,

Climate change is accelerating! Hong Kong Observatory said our winter will disappear after 20 years. The government is amending the Air Pollution Control Ordinance to limit air pollutants from the two local power companies, CLP and HEC after 2010.

Yet emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), the major greenhouse gas (GHG) causing climate change, is not regulated at all. Six green groups now urge your support to combat global warming by escalating the urgency for the government to restrict CO2 emissions from the power plants.

The two power companies are the biggest local sources of GHG emissions, accounting for 70% of the total CO2 released. They definitely contribute to climate change. However, the government only regulates power plants' so called 'conventional' air pollutants, such as sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and continues to turn a blind eye to capping their CO2.

http://write-a-letter.greenpeace.org/407

Send a letter to the Chief Executive and the Secretary of Environment Bureau today. Request for CO2 emission caps for power plants in the Air Pollution Control Ordinance. Let's stop allowing the! power companies to cook the climate!

I would love to know how much power CLP is selling to the Mainland. It is also high time that a campaign started to get it moved to a more remote area like the SOKO's. After all, it wants to have an LPG store there, so why not kill two birds with the one stone.

In certain wind conditions the Lamma belchers (funny they called a private housing estate downwind by that name) blanket the whole of HKI South with smog.

Only South Horizons residents would come up with that sort of complaint. I don't think it's true since the power plant is on the west of HK Island, and when we get W'ly wind, the smog that covered the whole of the territory came from the mainland, not only just Lamma. It only happens when there is a tropical cyclone east of HK in early autumn.

I read in the newspaper that commentators were surprised that despite many days of heavy rain, the pollution index for the period was still high.

The above picture refers.

I note in yesterday's SCMP, HK Electric promised to use mostly LPG instead of coal for the duration of the Olympics to help cut pollution levels.

Dingo

I catch your sarcasm.

The Glory of the State is more important than peoples health.
