A sweeping victory for Ms Yu, it seems.
Congratulations are in order, she won fair & square by a vast majority, no foul play at all, as far as I know. That's what democracy is all about, if we like the results or not...

Alex Chan has won a very respectable number of votes for a fresh candidate like him, capturing a lot of hearts and minds and votes during his relentless, tireless campaigning. A natural, democratic, environmentally aware & personable politician like him will get his chance for elected office very soon, I'm sure.
<HR>
Early in the morning, there was a LONG LINE outside the town hall! The average age of these voters was beyond 60, I'd guess. The DAB knows how to mobilise their supporters...

But the DAB has suffered badly in these elections all over HK, overtaken so far by the Democrats. It'll take a bit longer on the islands for democratic ideas to take hold, but it'll get there someday...

But I still haven't met anybody yet who admitted to voting for Ms Yu. Even two local shopkeepers who are vehemently pro-old-reclamation voted for Alex Chan, as they've never seen Ms. Yu during her 6 years in power, like most people, even the locals...

I might have found out why! It seems that she doesn't like meeting people with questions or different opinions and especially dislikes having her photo taken. Shooting some photos yesterday on the way to the Fun Day, I approached her outside the town hall, never having met her before and she not knowing me either, asking in a friendly way if I could take her picture. She didn't answer at all, hid behind somebody like a school girl and quickly walked away, hiding her face. I was amazed and flabbergasted.

She actually looked quite good and dapper in her all-red suit, red T-shirt and shoes, pearl necklace and golden sash. I don't agree with judging politicians by their looks at all, it's only actions that really count. But judge for yourself. Photos shot from far away & blurry, before asking her:

And one more picture, walking away quickly from the polling station, hiding from the camera...
Publicity-shy politicians, only on Lamma?

It seems that for Alex to win he will need to gain support from local people. LG you are right from all the controversy about Ms Yu's appearance she looks perfectly presentable.

Not sure it is totally fair and square. It has been alleged that half the grannies from all over lamma were carted in and assisted in placing the tick in the 'correct' box.

Richard {L_WROTE}:
1 CHAN KAI CHUNG ALEX 361
2 YU LAI FAN 794*

The good news is that 1155 out of 2122 eligible voted: 54%, pretty remarkable for HK. It shows that Yu was motivated by Alex's challenge to round up voters. I have to think though that many of these are like my mother-in-law, who voted DAB because they treated her to a dinner.

In Australia we have a law, ridiculed in other countries, that makes it compulsory both to register and to vote. So turnouts are always well over 90% (there is a small fine if you don't). This means that bad weather or simple apathy don't determine the result -- since people have to turn out, they have to make a choice.

Since the population here is over 5000, more than half didn't bother to register, and almost half of those that did didn't turn out to vote, leaving the DAB's 794 to decide the issue. If Alex or any other challenger tries next time, he has to start early and get more people on the rolls first.

Alex called me this morning to tell me - but he's not giving up, but he really feels that the real problem is not enough people are registering as voters. So for God's sake if you want to change the situation - REGISTER!! Even my wife voted for the first time in her life!

I reckon the 2nd pic of Lammadonna Yu said a lot - there was our District Councillor photographed in front of the sign pointing people to the polling station, which she's walking away from...

And then there are people who had never met her during her 6 years stint as councillor... had she remained in her lovely Main Street flat for all those years?

Is it worth going here to see if it results in this or this ?

Sherlock, perhaps your good friend leglessonlamma might have been carted in to place the tock in the 'correct' 'box'?

Me hopes the DAB not that stupid... perhaps one of the rural committees and various local organisations behind the campaign paid for the dinners?

I don't know the details, and certainly they wouldn't do it so blatantly now with the ICAC breathing down their neck, but she was made to feel obligated.

Goodness me... finally something you don't know the ins and outs of! You should be ashamed of yerself, Alan

I'm assuming it was your mumsy-in-law who was made to feel obligated to vote DAB after a casual dinner and hang out with the other locals; and not the candidate made to feel obligated to buy dinner for votes? Either way, it is very evil

The winner has put up notes of thanks over her posters her in Pak Kok and one of them is in English!! The grammar is quite poor, and a bit humorous to boot. Still who knows, maybe after the trouncing her party recieved there will be more openess here, at least for a while. Having said that I still feel the need to go over her poster with my angry red pen.

Pakcockien,

Could you take a photo of the sticker, please? Or type her message into a post if it's not too long, please?
I'd love to see it and I'm not the only one, I think. Haven't noticed it around YSW last night yet...

Was that concrete will, or concrete wall? For those that pm'ed me, Yu Lai Ng Kau is a spoof name, as in 'you lying cow'. Thank you very much.
