| Post subject: | Lamma sea water |
My thoughts of yesterday, it might take another 10 years for the dirty water to arriving here on Lamma are dented, is already starting to happen now, it occurred perhaps before without me noticing; I am not a biologist and inspect the water every day. but this morning at about 6:20 overlooking Hung Shin Yeh beach one could clearly see a big carpet of mildly reddish sandy water and at 7:20 it broke off with grayish blue lines in it, like fat in a marble steak. It was a very light coating and I don’t think the early morning swimmer, about 5 of them ,noticed… The dirty water has arrived on Lamma, quicker as I thought it might happen when I saw this problem first starting about half way between HK and Macao at the beginning of this year. In my view a Biologist should be consulted to take frequent samples at various points and perhaps the Fisherman on the Trawlers fishing in the water should be inteviwed.I have seen about 10 trawlers all looking the same fishing between Lamma and Macao, they perhaps noticed this enormous environmental damage a long time ago. If someone does a research on the developer of the Baroque, his backers and there backer, you easy understand why this would be the Investment Fund with all the connections you would need helping to stop the pollution coming out of Chinas Pearl River Delta to continuing living in an clean environment on Lamma supporting the growth of biological vegetables and meet locally and helping Macao and the South China See to reach that goal too. You have to implement deeds in to the building permission going to be given to The Baroque and that way influencing the architectural looks of the houses and marina buildings as well as the biological farming, the tree and plant nursery, farming research education and visitor centre the conservation corridor the working conditions for the labor intensive service businesses to be established there etc.all this could be gained for free with little effort at present. A splendid future for Lamma is in your hands and if you let it slip away you will get exactly the outcome you fear plus a permanent cover of dirty water as on Macao’s beaches surrounding the Lamma coastline ….. |

Its a river delta, what do you expect, I can assure you its been like that since I was a kid in the 60's HSY is one of the cleanest beaches in HK and its got better since they started treating sewage in HK. As for LG you don't have to interfere we're all adults here. probably. Kids would hardly be interested in this Guff. |

The dirty water I reported her by two weeks ago first ,has broken up now into little red drops contaminating all the beach in Hung Shin Yeh and next to the Power Station.Go an have a look!!!! poilkoop {L_WROTE}: HSY is one of the cleanest beaches in HK and its got better since they started treating sewage in HK.
True,as an old exhibitor at the APLF I can see a slight improvement by crossing with Star Ferry to the Exhibition und Convection Centre, But we deal here with the water coming out into the South China See through the other arms of the Pearl river, containing all the dirt of Canton not from Hong Kong. You imply in your Reply that this is normal for you. Are you sure you are an Environmentalist wanting a cleaner environment? It does not sound so to me! |

According to a swimmer who swims there every day for the last 20 years (me), there has been thick red algae there for much of the last week. Ask the lifeguards if you don't believe me. But the smell alone is distinctive. That isn't "dirty water" as such, though it's probably a result of nitrogen fertilizer or other organic waste. Anyway, it's not dangerous, though unpleasant when too thick. And none of this has anything to do with the Baroque, so I have split it into a new topic. |

I noticed the red bubble type things at power station beach on Sunday and chose not to swim. Is it definitely safe to swim in it considering no one seems to know for sure what it is? If someone does know please enlighten the rest of us! Thanks. |

If someone does know please enlighten the rest of us! Thanks. As above, I'm pretty sure it's algae. I've been swimming for the last week and no ill effects. Feels a bit weird when you go through a thick clump, and I take care not to to get any in my mouth. It's going to be colder the rest of this week, but I'll try to make it out today at least. |

Alan {L_WROTE}: And none of this has anything to do with the Baroque, so I have split it into a new topic. I made my view clear, only a powerful company in China can stop the dirt coming via the Pearl River and the backer of the backer of baroque is perhaps the most powerful of them all. All laws are been made in Beijing to protect the environment, but polluters are getting away,if in this case it will effect the Baroque,I am sure they find a way to stop the polluters..... re;the currant pollution,I swam on Sunday into it and nearly panicked, therefore it would not be advisable for children to swim, and not many people as usually did swim on Sunday |

Sunday was fine, but gloppy. Yesterday most of the algae had cleared, but there were a few "stingers", which I believe are jellyfish (you can't see them, but you feel them all right). I think the primary problem is the overfishing which has decapitated the food chain. Nothing swimming larger than a thumb can survive the nets here. {L_QUOTE}: http://www.worldwatch.org/node/4708 .

Ha, ha, ha, ha, aha,......... you're hilarious. Take the new plant of Pharma Giant Bayer. The Beijing Government rejected the Plan by not giving building permission because it's waist is too dirty. immediately the foreign secretary Westerwelle came to Beijing and criticized Gay rights in China and Chancellor Merkel threatened more critic on Human Rights in China should the Plant not go ahead. That the UN is criticizing Germany on Human Rights issues doe's not matter, the resentments Westerners have regarding China leaves them yearning to any Brainwash concerning China and after they are more as happy to repeat that nonsense endlesly. China in my view is the best run Country on earth,Honk Kong should be proud of being part of China. And NO I am not payed by Beijing,I am a Consrvativ Voter in Chelsea and in Germany ewald {L_WROTE}: re;the currant pollution,I swam on Sunday into it and nearly panicked, therefore it would not be advisable for children to swim, and not many people as usually did swim on Sunday Alan {L_WROTE}: I swam Sunday and Tuesday. But they prefer the easy way. I agree overfishing is a Problem and therefore take a look at the Mainland Chinese Fish and Shrimp farms and learn from them how to grow decent Fish and Shrimps. |

Back on topic ... today was warm and sunny so I did some laps at the beach. The algae has cleared and no stingers either, pleasantly clear and refreshing. I wasn't the only one either.

I wasn't the only one either. This was no Algae,it was some kind of dirt and the younger of the three Lifeguard thinks clearly as all his family are Fisherman its the same dirt as all year round in Macao. I have my doubts-perhaps its this big 90-130 meter long Tanker, same as moored outside now cleaning its Tanks and dumping the dirt in the bay. Algae forms later around that waist and eats it up,even if its radioactive. |

Alan {L_WROTE}: Back on topic ...
My first Post about this dirty Water was on 19th October, Yesterday on the 15th November, nearly one Month later; the Police coordinated an operation with 15 Ships and started yesterday at 9 in the Morning at the Power Station Beach with Frogman and Scientists taking samples the Marine Department was there a first with the TUNG FAT Yacht and later joint by the bigger TIN HAU and a Chopper circling above taking pictures. Later on five Cleaning Ships arrived spraying something on the Water and this Morning at Nine the POLICE 45 arrived with divers, so they must have found something |

I've heard (from a usually reliable source) that it was just an emergency drill by the Power Station about a potential oil spill, so they'll be ready if it actually would ever happen. Let me confirm that with them directly.... Anybody got pictures? ewald, anybody? |

I've seen several real oil slicks at the beach, an average of one or two a year. It's pretty obvious when it happens. You can smell the oil. I've got it in my hair and had to rinse it out with turpentine. So I know an oil slick when it happens. I've seen no sign of one recently. ( I didn't swim yesterday, I have a cold.) As for Chairman Mao, you're a loony. He was a tyrant that killed over 35 million of his own people rather than admit he'd made a mistake in his wacky economic theories. Only after he was dead and buried could China's economy and society recover and start growing when they abandoned his Little Red Book, replacing it with Deng Xiaoping's "It is glorious to be rich". |

Boss, hahaha, not sure if that's really a reliable enough source.... I've heard that drill explanation yesterday night, after Boostcamp. My fellow sweaters are usually reliable sources, way too too tired afterwards to make up stories and rumours.... |

OK, another quick reply from HK Electric: "Please be advised that the spillage drill was conducted by Marine Department and we did not have any information about it. As in previous practice, if there is any exercise/drill that will likely draw residents' attention (like smoke coming out, sirens go off, etc), we will inform local community leaders in advance and write to you to keep your readers informed.... For your information, an annual fire drill will be conducted tomorrow morning, Thu, Nov 17, together with Fire Services Department. But the exercise will be done inside the plant - no smoke, no siren will go off. Some fire engines will enter the plant while a fire boat will berth at our coal jetty." The SCMP published a photo today with this caption: "The city's response to a marine oil spill was tested off Lamma Island yesterday during an annual anti-pollution exercise led by the Marine Dept. Emergency responders practised containing oil spewing from a tanker stranded near a beach beside the cooling water intakes for the Lamma oower station. Such a spill would threaten the plant and Sham Wan, a nesting site for sea turtles." Plus two much more detailed stories and a news video, courtesy of Google Alert: http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/eastasia/view/1165589/1/.html http://7thspace.com/headlines/399804/oilex_2011_tests_oil_spill_responses.html This drill even has an official code name: Oilex 2011. Someone on Power Station Beach yesterday must have taken some photos, for sure? |
