For all those who "recycle" and then feel that they are "environmentally friendly" and doing their bit to save the environment (then buying loads of useless stuff to fill up their apartment and pollute the air by taking taxis everywhere and flying on big aeroplanes) - a nice bit of news!!

I just observed the local recycling in action. The binman/refuse collector emptied the standard green bins down at the temple/clinic/football pitch. He then emptied the recycling bins, throwing the black bin bags in amongst all the other rubbish and took it all mixed together down to the tip.

In the words of bc chris "hahahahahahahahahaha"

Doggy don't know why you are on the offensive with the starfish. By reporting this on the forum he seems to care enough to alert people. Next take it to FEHD and get the mispractice stopped! But probably need a photo as evidence.

Reporting or gloating? I'm not sure that our brown friend is really try to alert people - alarm them perhaps.

But I could be wrong. Mr Brownfish, are you intending to report this irresponsible behaviour to the proper authorities and so do your bit for furthering the worldwide campaign to enhance the chances of mankind, and all other kinds, surviving on the resources that are still available for us to take from the planet?

Or were you really just gloating?

I agree with Starfish that this is pretty funny, but only if you do NOT recycle yourself. Thanks for alerting us.
As somebody actually using those very same recycle bins, I don't find this waste of our time and effort funny at all.

Who to contact to find out more?
Talking to the refuse collectors in Cantonese might not explain much, as they just follow orders.
These are the same people ripping down posters daily from the Democracy Wall and other places around the village, even private houses.

DC? Village Rep? Rural committee? Who's FEHD, legless?

Starfish, what time are they emptying these bins. Let's get a photo...

The cleansing department are the ones responsible for clearing the bins. The number of their office in Yung Shue Wan is 2982 1554

FEHD is the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department, and Legless is right, they could well do something about this if it really is the case. FEHD Island District Office is 2852 4262.

Nobody picking up at the Cleansing Dept. Early lunch break?
Will try again in the afternoon.
We might need a Cantonese speaker to call, though.

I smell a good story for the Dec Lamma-zine...

I find it so outrageous that it is laughable, but easily put a stop to.

I've spoken with the Cleansing Dept and FEHD over Fun Day stuff (like providing recycle bins)... so there are people in both offices who speak English.

However, before accusing, don't you think it would be a good idea to verify the source of the report?

http://www.fehd.gov.hk/events/healthy/report.htm

Above a link for reporting blackspots. May be members of the forum could start filling these in and emailing FEHD on a regular basis about many black spots on Lamma.

Doggy you are right prior to reporting it you need evidence.

Also, isn't there the vague possibility that, even though they are all stacked together for ease, the person doing the collecting is able to identify and seperate the bags later.

After all a big full of cans or bottles or papers will behave, feel and sound different to bags full of mixed rubbish.

It would be better to ask the question, "Is the recycling being collected and seperated properly?" rather than shouting "Why isnt it being recyled properly?"

Doggy,
No accusing, of course, just asking about the recycling and what happens with the content of the bins. Without proof, I'm not accusing anybody, it might just be one person doing this to save time and not all recycle bins treated the same way.
But a photo would be most helpful, that's why the question about the daily timing of the bin emptying.

It's also part of a much larger context, HK-wide, according to a recent HK Connection story on TV, lots of recycled stuff going into the same landfills. This seems to happen all over HK and was even "admitted" by official sources a while ago, recycling not worth their effort as paper and alu prizes too low right now, etc.

But if this would be general practice and cannot be changed right now, why have recycle bins at all? Just remove them and stop pretending.

GIven the overall context, that would be a worthy bit of investigative journalism to carry out.

Yes, Doggy,
Want to help investigating? Just fact finding, no accusing...

That sounds a good idea, how about it LG a brilliant subject for Lamma.com. Both the recyling and a drive on the black spots such as at the police post where rubbish has been alleged to have been dumped.

I will certainly discuss it next time I am in contact with the Cleansing Dept (next weekend probably before our pre-fun day beach cleanup).

RE: Police post. I live in Hung Shing Ye and can verify that the refuse from the Building of their new bike shelter has all been dumped in the bushes nearby (and is slowly dissappearing in the undergrowth). That includes the previous large metal and glass signboard with its shelter and the posts that they used to attach their bikes to. My wife and I have mentioned it to passing policemen several times and pointed out the dumped stuff to them.

I think the next step is to call up the police with a complaint, 'I would like to report an illegal dumping...'
