Some inconsiderate contractors working on the renovation of a house in Yung Shue Long New Village placed several metal cables around a mature lychee tree that stands on government land in front of 13A Yung Shue Long New Village. The tree branches were used as part of a pulley system to lift loads up the hill. After finishing the renovation, they left behind the cables, a makeshift platform and some construction waste. Cables are now rusty and damaging the tree. Some of the branches are already showing indentation where the cables were tightened.
This is a beautiful tree but the damage could make it unsafe in the future if tree rot sets in.
I have just emailed the Efficiency Unit (1823) and wonder if anybody else reported it and knows who was responsible for the abandoned pulley system.

I had a look, it's just up behind the Water Department building, there are two steel cables looped around the tree, and leading way up the hill above a stairway.

It would be easy enough to take them down, all you need is a small spanner to open the clamps, but then you'd have to roll up 100 metres or so of heavy steel cable and drag it off the stairway. Also, you'd wonder if the contractor was going to look for you and beat you up.

That much heavy cable must be worth a few thousand dollars, but it looks like the contractor just leaves it wherever he last used it till he needs it again, knowing no one will dare make him move it, least of all the gutless civil servants who might at best put up a notice and then retire from the scene.

The tree doesn't look in immediate danger, but the cables will eventually get embedded in the trunk and then when it is finally removed real damage will be done.
