Save Lamma campaign {L_WROTE}:
Dear Friends of Lamma,
A great deal has happened since the last Save Lamma update.
There has been excellent in-depth TV coverage by TVB and
Cable TV, and additional news articles are in the works.
The coverage so far strongly supports our data -- most
people want to retain Yung Shue Wan's character, and they
do not want large-scale reclamation.
The most important step forward for the campaign so far,
however, was the meeting on Sept 28th held with Anthony
Kwan, Phyllis Li, and Timothy Lui of the Planning Department,
and H.D. Wong of the Civil Engineering Department. At the
meeting we made a presentation with the intention of opening
dialogue towards a better future for Yung Shue Wan.
The discussion was encouraging. There was general agreement
with the points raised on behalf of the community, and the
government committed to redrawing their current plan. They
also said that they would consult us and other relevant
bodies on the new plan, and then would take it to the
people of Yung Shue Wan in an open public forum to reach a
high level of consensus.
Needless to say we feel very encouraged. Although it would
be naive to expect too much, it is nevertheless great news
for the community, and a positive precedent for Hong Kong
in general. Thanks for the many people who have supported
this campaign so far, and thanks to the government for
listening. May this spirit of cooperation continue.
