Greetings
I came across this description of HK recently while surfing the web.Perhaps Donald "Duck" could use it to encourage visitors to come to our "Hazy" world city!

mmmmmmmmmm????.....................Harbour of Life and Corridor of Death all in one place.HK is soooo convenient!

For info on how the API is not quite as "World City " standard as we may be led to believe the following site is useful........

Hmmmm. This prompts me to ask ... in which direction does the prevailing wind blow most of the year in HK? Does it generally guide the pollution away from Lamma? I have lived within the "black dust" zone of a coal-burning power plant before, and didn't find it all that amusing. Are the chimneys at HEC tall enough to cause the dust fallout to miss Lamma? Curious minds want to know

We have better air on Lamma than most of HK. No dust or smoke from the power station, that's carried up and away (and directly out to sea most of the time). You can see the brown haze over the harbour and city from the hilltops.

Tung Chung has the worst air, smoke comes down the Pearl River and piles up against the mountains just behind the town. It'll get worse when they build the bridge that will come ashore nearby, bringing a constant stream of smoky diesel trucks.

Wow ... and they also have the benefit of fresh jet exhaust from the airport on their doorstep!

Are they actually going to build a bridge all the way to Zhuhai? It must be more than 25km away. That'll make living on Lantau's north shore just lovely. :?

Lamma is looking better all the time, despite the dogs' eggs.

Greetings
I think it's fair to say that the whole area is desperately gasping for air.
Here is a useful link that compares the Air pollution Index as used by our lying Govt with the index being used in the EU.

http://api.greenpeace.org.hk/index.php?lang=en

There is a table on the following page which also illustrates the discrepancy between HK's "World City" advice on activity levels for each range of API and that used in the USA.

http://www.cleartheair.org.hk/api.htm

Do a bit of calculating/adjustment based on the two pieces of above data and it must be clear for all to see that we are most certainly suffering some serious poisoning and most of the time should be staying indoors!!.
But hey we can't have the money generating slaves knowing that now can we

Don't forget it was Donald Tsang who once said that one of the biggest mistakes the Govt made a few years back was allowing the Air quality monitoring devices to be placed at street level.Much better to have them on the tops of the highest buildings where the air is slightly clearer!

As far as the power station on Lamma goes i can tell you that Pok Fu Lam receives sickening levels of rank air from Lamma when the wind is from the Southerly direction(the "summer months").During the Winter months the prevailing wind direction is N/N easterly and that brings the nastiness from China to the whole of HK.
Many Tung Chung residents who are living in public housing estates there are very worried and their health is noticably affected, the luckier of the older folk are leaving to live with relatives elsewhere.I have a friend who lives on the 20th+ floor and he very seldom can even see the street level clearly. There are resident concern groups mobilising there and they are trying to raise awareness.

Peace
