Hi,

I'm looking for a Environmental-friendly website, somewhere where there wll have some informations on how to live ecologically in Hong Kong. Does it exist ?

You don't need a website, living in an environmentally (not ecologically) friendly/ sustainable manner is mostly a matter of common sense.

Ecology is the relationship between an organism (you in this case) and its environment. You don't really have much choice but to "live ecologically"

However, if you are interested in these things, why not start with the WWF site:

Well, thank you.

Actually, I'm looking for things like where to recycle, where to buy some eco-friendly products, and so on...

As you noticed, I'm quite new in Hong Kong, and I just can't find what I'm looking for most of the time...

Something really strange for example, it doesn't seem like it is possible to recycle glass here ?

I'm also looking for a network of environmentally conscious people... :oops: It's work related...

I'll go to the WWF website, maybe I'll find something there.

I had the same question about glass recycling and contacted the environmental protection dept. Here's their reply:

"From time to time, we received this question from the members of public --
asking why there has not been a 4th bin for glass or glass bottles on top
of the 3-colour bins recycling system. As you may aware that the collection
and recycling of paper, metals (e.g. aluminium cans and iron) and plastic
have achieved some success in Hong Kong. This is mainly because there
exists a reasonably efficient and cost-effective collection and recovery
system in the "up-stream" (i.e. near the waste source) which is
complemented by a strong market demand occurring "down stream" to absorb
and utilize these recovered waste. The strong market demand for the
recovered waste is powered by the related manufacturing industries which
use those waste as raw material for producing various consumer products.

The crux of the problem for recycling glass in Hong Kong is that there is
very limited local demand and outlet for waste glass. In overseas countries
where waste glass recovery and recycling can successfully operate, they
always have their own glass manufacturing industries which can absorb
enormous amount of waste glass. In the absence of a local glass
manufacturing industry in Hong Kong, recycling of glass at a substantial
scale is inevitably difficult.

On the other hand, exporting waste glass from Hong Kong to overseas for
recycling, as what we have been doing for paper and metals, is however not
commercially viable because glass is heavy, bulky but cheap. At this
moment, the price of waste glass offered by oversea markets basically
cannot cover the transport cost.

In general, the problem of outlet has to be solved first before Hong Kong
can think about setting up collection system to extensively promote waste
glass recovery and recycling. Our department has been trying to find other
outlets / applications for waste glass and has commissioned the Polytechnic
University and the University of Science and Technology to carry out
studies on the application of waste glass in construction (e.g. making
pavement blocks and road surface) and other uses. The studies are on-going
and hopefully would provide useful information to determine whether a glass
recycling programme can be effectively implemented in Hong Kong."

(haven't heard any news on these studies yet)

Holistic Hong Kong is a spiritually oriented website and might not therefore appeal to less spiritually-oriented persons. But my own experience points ultimately to something spiritual at the heart of environmental (better understood as ecological) consciousness.

I also consider myself to be a relative newcomer to Hong Kong (especially new to Lamma - having moved here only a week ago) so I would love to share notes as you get more settled in.

Thanks :-) Actually my concern is more general than just glass...it was only an example of question I may want to ask.
