Greetings Big Up to the organizers of yesterdays campaign.......... I caught the following on the BBC world news website ""The "Lights Out" campaign is little more than a crass publicity stunt by ill-informed liberals, tree huggers and society drop-outs. It has no effect on air quality nor does it raise concern about air quality amongst the ordinary people of Hong Kong Karl Pilkington, Hong Kong, China "" Well it's my opinion that "Society drop-outs" and "Tree huggers" are exactly what HK needs more of because without lifting a finger they contribute positively to less pollution. Meanwhile I'm sure Karl is working hard to inform the "ordinary" people. Peace JJ |

"Ill-informed liberals, tree huggers and society drop-outs": Hey, does Karl know me personally? That's quite a good description of myself... and proud of it! Congrats to the organisers yesterday, the campaign's media coverage was unprecedented and "Director Alastair" must be the most famous Lammaite in all of HK these days. He actually got applause the other day in Banyan Bay Cafe when proudly showing off his video of a 5-minute interview on Bloomberg Asia. Hard to believe? OK, OK, I started the applause myself,,, Some local bars followed the protest and switched off their lights. Take a bow, Island Bar, Fountainhead and Diesel's. Maybe some more places joined in that my Main Street Correspondent missed? I was at the ferry pier shooting the village before, during and after 8pm. Sorry to say, I noticed only a single house in my high-resolution photo comparisons actually switching their lights off. But it's mostly restaurants along the harbour who didn't want to go dark as some of their customers might take the opportunity to take off w/o paying, maybe... Anybody got any Lights-Out Lamma photos? Looking at the absolute record pollution today (almost 190 in town!!!), let's hope that this was not just a one-time publicity stunt and that the organisers will keep at it on an ongoing basis! |

"That Mr Robins, a scxulptor, was helped by Lamma "hippies" and some beautiful people from Lan Kwai Fong, probably made it more difficult for the campaign to gain mainstream or grasssroots status." (Alex Lo SCMP August 10 2006 A12) Hippies on Lamma? Where? |

Lamma-Gung {L_WROTE}: Sorry to say, I noticed only a single house in my high-resolution photo comparisons actually switching their lights off.
According to The Standard: "Views from Victoria Peak also showed Lamma Island, home to many expatriates, plunge into darkness at the appointed time." So did they just make that up? And from Victoria Peak, what can you see of Lamma anyway? Pak Kok? |

Well, I have the photos to prove it. Maybe Pak Kok residents had organised something to get more homes to switch off than in Yung Shue Wan. Also, it's almost all residential over there, with maybe much better compliance than the Main Street businesses. Anybody got photos of mostly residential areas on Lamma before and during the 3 minutes? Actually, it doesn't matter much anyway, as the campaign was a success anyway, rasing a tremendous amount of awareness against pollution and even managed to embarrass the govt. |

Hi Alex "ill-informed" Lo took time to belittle the efforts of others while probably doing Sweet FA to utilise his position as a journalist to help with the campaign. Whether or not millions of people did switch their lights off , the international publicity will give the world at large a more realistic view of HK as a haven for greedy,selfish and environmentally/spiritually destructive monsters.

Poor Alex. I can almost see his eyes rolling as he writes of LKF's byooooteeful people and holding his nose as he thinks about Lamma's unwashed hippies. So much disdain for a large portion of SCMP readership. That Mr Robins, a sculptor, was helped by Lamma "hippies" and some beautiful people from Lan Kwai Fong, probably made it more difficult for the campaign to gain mainstream or grass-roots status. - Alex Lo, SCMP, Aug 10 |
