Does the island council (ha!) or whatever it's called do anything about rubbish on the beaches? Any number to call? Tannery beach is covered in it ... A few of us have shifted some of it but it keeps coming - could do with some help. Tks. |

I think this has to do with the fact that at the moment the ocean currents seem to be bringing Pearl River water our way. If you look closely at the beach rubbish you will find a lot of fresh water plants such as must live in plently along the Pearl River. So, the water around Lamma right now is saturated with rubbish washed downstream out of Mainland China. As much as one cleans - more will come. I dont mean to suggest that we should give-up on cleaning but this is, I think, why it seems like a losing battle for the time being. |

Not just that, but the heavy rains last week would have washed a lot of crap into the rivers and now the sea. HSY has been rather unpleasant the last two weeks with the huge amount of floating plastic and vegetation. |

A friend was travelling up the PRD once and saw huge piles of rubbish bags piled at the water's edge. He was told by a local they were "waiting for the rain to arrive - and then it will go away". Apparently there was a squad of government cleaners bagging up the rubbish on Yung Shue Wan beach a day or three ago. Is it possible to call 'em up? I think I already know the answer, but anyway ... |

Not that I'm lazy, or anything.... I have friends coming on Sat from Italy and I had suggested we go to HSY for a swim, telling them the beach is usually pristine and the water crystal clear Er, um, if anyone happens to get there before Sat I would really appreciate a nod as to the 'usability' of the water (and beach, of course). I'm working so cannot easily get there till Sat otherwise I would trot across myself to check. Many thanks for any feedback. |

Boss {L_WROTE}: nod as to the 'usability' of the water (and beach, of course)..
Pretty grotty at the moment, I'm afraid. Safe enough, I still swim every day, but have to dodge islands of plastic waste when I do laps. But it might be better by the weekend if the rain holds off. |

It might be because the wind for the last two weeks has been mostly south westerly which blows surface rubbish onshore to Hung Shuing Ye. Big Wave Bay and Shek O on the east of HK Island have been clean. |

Maybe, but I was referring to a clean-up operation on YSW beach, which is non-gazetted - as is Tannery beach. If they can clean up one non-gazetted beach, they can presumably do another. But ... who to contact? The rubbish is still coming in - heaps of it on the beach and more floating offshore. |

Not just the beaches that are disgusting. YSW harbour is just a carpet of rubbish today too. Decided to come into the village for breakfast, instead of a usual walk along the beach. (tired of stepping over bottles, etc.... for the past few days) I'm near the harbour now, and I've ordered my coffee,.. but have decided to skip breakfast and go home and cook myself, as the STINK coming off the water is just too bad. I feel like I'm sat near an open sewer. The stench is just unbelievably bad!! I'm off home now
