Smartone just told me I could buy the usb toggle with a sim card in it, connect it to my laptop and get 43mbps and 6gig (50$ per 500MB thereafter) for 320$ per month (24mths contract). 10gig is 450$. Isn't this the obvious solution to the PCCW conundrum? Am I missing something or what? Is 6gig not that much perhaps? I have no idea what I use per month does anyone have any advice? I live with 3 people and we all use the net, downloading quite a bit of music and films legally of course, and surfing quite a bit. hmmm. |

A short search seemed to have provided the answer to that question! |

Search where? On this site? You can get a similar deal even cheaper from other service providers, I've checked it out recently. Mobile 20+ Mbps download is about the best you can get anywhere on Lamma, I think. I've seen peaks of 50+Mbps but these are very rare. No need for a USB toggle and additional SIM card, your mobile phone works usually fine as a Wifi hotspot for all your home devices. No extra costs besides your standard mobile/data plan and your standard PCCW broadband, about $500 in total expenses/month. But it's the data caps that make this a not-perfect solution even though it works well and is sufficient data/month for anything but big up/downloads. The search continues for Faster Broadband on Lamma continues and it doesn't look good. PCCW upgrading some of us to vDSL2 (new, expensive modem, but same copper phone wires and microwave link to HK Island), looks to be the only near-term option, maybe next year. |

gfunk {L_WROTE}: Am I missing something or what? Is 6gig not that much perhaps? I have no idea what I use per month does anyone have any advice? I live with 3 people and we all use the net, downloading quite a bit of music and films legally of course, and surfing quite a bit.. If you download or stream video, you can use 6GB in a few hours. For reference: I normal DVD disc is 4.3 GB, Bluray is 25 GB. A useful little free Windows app that monitors your usage, by the hour/day/week/month: Networx https://www.softperfect.com/products/networx/ It tells me that in November I downloaded 63 GB. My best (worst?) month was 152 GB. That's just me alone. When my daughter goes online, or my wife watches soap operas on her phone, God knows. A couple of years ago they didn't enforce the data cap for these various kinds of Internet via mobile services. Now they've got enough suckers signed up, they do. It's like having a sports car capable of 200 kph, for which you are allowed 1 litre of fuel a month. |
