Can we get a close-up of one eye only?

Wow, you finally did it! Congratulations! Wildlife Photo of the Day!

Now, can we get a close-up of the LEFT eye, please?

Harry got some nice shots of this little lady about a month ago...., I've seem her around a couple of times but just been too lazy to make the effort.
With the fireworks about to scare most birds away in the next couple of days, thought I should make the effort.
Got up this morning at 4:30, set up a hide at about 5:45 in the dark........, not easy & not fun in the middle of a muddy field.
Wasn't too cold at first but it got progressively cooler as the morning worn on.

Anyway, my endeavours paid off & I got a number of useable shots despite the bad light

Male & female Grey-backed Thrushes seen in the garden along with a couple of misc. Warblers & a male Fork-tailed Sunbird - but no photos coz the light has been so bad.

This chap is from Yung Shue Long Valley a few days ago.........

Got this one today in Yung Shue Long Valley.
Assume it is a Dusky Warbler, but for the stripe above the eye...... have left it to HKBWS & BF to work it out.

Suggestion seems to be the Dusky Warbler...., except the dark brow makes it uncertain....., are also considering the rarer Yellow Streaked Warbler (seems it comes down to the sound - is either a "Tak" or a "Tzik" that differentiates it..... hmmm)...., so will try & get a sound byte on saturday.

In the meantime this chap has been around the garden for several weeks but only comes in at dusk........ will try & get a better shot later.

The debate continues.......

Like most seemingly, I dont know much about Yellow Streaked, but can it show so little streaking in the central belly, breast, throat and chin? - the second photo shows this off very clearly. The only OB image face-on shows (to me at least!) subtle streaking despite the light flare:

Svensson (1992) seems to use this as a feature to separate Raddes (and presumably Dusky) from Yellow Streaked, stating there is no streaking on chin and throat in Raddes. Or is that just too crude for us in 2009?

Cheers
you would expect a bird in full breeding plumage (the OBI photo was taken in June) to show more yellow streaks than a midwinter bird, especially if the current bird is a first year bird.

The HKBWS article also suggests that YSW shows apricot undertail - which i a pretty good match on my screen (macbook).

I'm not insisting on YSW, but this little trio are not always straightforward, and I'm interested to learn how to sort out these intermediate birds

{L_QUOTE}:
Thanks all for your assistance.
Below is a link of an identical bird taken by a birder in China in much brighter/harsher light.
The claim is that it is a Dusky but I think the same issues arise

another of a Dusky Warbler taken about 18 months ago 50 yards away from the location of my image .........

The differences occur in the bill & legs, but also the general facial markings.
Hope it is of help.

Looks pretty similar......., plumage is slightly different, but that could be down to the light & the colder weather and moving toward breeding season.
Neil & I will be back this morning to try & check the sound.
In the same spot have seen 3 Little Egret, Chinese Pond Heron, White faced Wagtail, & about 30 Red-billed Starlings....... not much else.
Will probably move the hide late morning to another location.
