chynchen {L_WROTE}:
Indeed, you can get a decent apartment under $30K in Mid-levels with satellite channels with club facilities, even you are bound to be in Hong Kong, whats the point living on Lamma, unless you are bound to be in Hong Kong, given the presence of european situation, you can live much better with the same amount of money on accommodation in Ibiza, Sicile, San Sébastian etc
Many of us Lammaites moved here when the rents were well below $10,000/month for 700 sqft, and they still are well below $10,000 for many of us, especially outside YSW. Together with the traffic-free, green environment, the mix of friendly and interesting people and the proximity to the city it makes it all worthwhile to live here, still one of the very best places to live in HK.
But the massive rent increases are obviously destroying this fine balance. It'll correct itself soon, reaching a higher, but not crazy level soon, I'd guess. My former flat has already dropped by $3,000/month asking price as they couldn't find a tenant for over 3 months already.
And about the "satellite channels with club facilities": We can get satellite HD TV and Internet TV (not NOW) with 192 channels, including European channels for very little money here. There's a gym, sports courts, great hiking/biking territory and several nice beaches, more fun than indoor sports facilities. Still a fine place to live, but "Ibiza, Sicily, San Sébastian" and many other places could be very nice, too. Someday I might sit in one of those seaside cafes, ordering a caffè macchiato or a café au lait...
OK, sorry for my little early-morning (6:30am) rant - obviously inspired by my usual freshly-ground, French-pressed wake-up coffee... Perked up enough now to get on my bike, up to Lamma Winds...
