Alan {L_WROTE}:
There is a strict limit on how much they can spend on their campaigns ($45,000 I think). They have to account for every cent they spend and every poster they put up.

If only you said that at the start of this thread, Alan! I wouldn't have had so many nightmares about 100+ Yu Lai Funs chasing after me!! But thanks for the info - and to webdog too, who had a similar view on the numbering system.

La Miglione {L_WROTE}:
Samson, did you not notice the frighteningly bossy apearance of candidate Yu Lai Fan? I am sure the numbers must be so that she can keep track wether al the posters she glued up are still there, and if not punish the culprit

stay out of her way, and dont touch those posters if you have any sense of selfpreservation

After being haunted by YLF continuously for about 2 weeks now, I am convinced that the posters are in fact a part of her "Big Brother" style surveilance system, which the poster girl herself enjoys daily and nightly at her top floor flat!

I'm still accepting questions for her, as I'll be trying to interview her very soon for the Nov Lamma-zine...

L-G, if I lose any sleep from this new photo of who I now dub as Lammadonna, I'm going to curse you to all eternity

How the heck did you find that? She certainly looks less bossy - but a bit criminal-ish...

Had posted a few questions earlier in the thread, by the way. She even has a life-size cardboard poster with her policies printed at the main street now!

(Edited once for very clumsy grammar)

Going for breakfast this morning, who did I run into by sheer coincidence? Alex Chan! He was out all by himself distributing election leaflets around the villages. He just had breakfast in the same Chinese place I was heading to. Photo on the left.

Samson, Alex explained the mystery of the numbered poster in more detail. The govt. requires the poster to be numbered, as they pay for it and every dollar of the fixed campaigning allowance per candidate needs to be accounted for. Putting number stickers on the posters is cheaper than numbering them while printing them.

He's eager to answer any questions put to him by Lamma.com.hk visitors. RTHK just wanted to do a debate between him and Miss Yu, but she turned them down. I'm not confident she'll answer our questions either, but I'll try my best anyway.

We have a great nickname for Miss Yu now, thanks to Samson, our new and very creative member. We need one for Alex as well! "Epic fight in DC Elections: Lammadonna vs. ?" Suggestions?

Birdface, I'm afraid there's only 1 cardboard Lammadonna. If you really want it for your shower, you may have to steal it from the laundry shop at the Main Street (not at Bubbles - but the only diagonal to DeliLamma). In the meantime, I hope there won't be talk of a Lammadonna blow up doll...

Lamma Gung, thanks for getting more info on the numbering. So... do the candidates need to account for each and every poster? Re: nickname for Alex... lets all keep our little heads rolling...

Interesting to note that only Alex has canvassed Pak Kok (well, put two posters up at least).

We still don't know enough about their manifestos. I am interested in the one who will give the Police more pay, less hours and hammocks.

I got my polling card in the post today. With this is an Introduction to Candidates brochure. They each get half a page and a mug shot. Alex's platform was bilingual, the details have been already published here. Mrs Yu however decided to go for just Chinese. A pretty insensitive decision considering that Lamma must have one of the highest expat concentrations of any electorate. Her photo has been airbrushed more heavily than the average Playboy centrefold.

I can't find much on his policies apart from he was connected to save lamma. What about social issues on Lamma.

I needed that little piece of information... not!!

Sherlock, if you're a voter, you should get the Disctrict Council elections package in the mail soon. If not, keep an eye out for Alex's numbered posters, I think his election platform is printed on the posters too.

Failing all that, post your questions here so we can talk about it amongst ourselves and perhaps even ask Alex about your concerns.

No problem with what she proposes and I assume that Alex Chan's can't be alot different? It seems much about personal effort and ability, which we don't know about yet. I think a dual language primary school is a big issue for many expats and overseas chinese, which she doesn't address.

I have reservations about her emphasis on constructing stuff. Also with the totally opaque way projects are proposed and carried out. Not a single word about the natural environment of Lamma which is why most of us are here.

I also think she's trying to claim credit for everything she can, regardless of whether she had much to do with it.

One project I do support though is a public toilet next to the football field. The kids who play there urinate on the floor of the "changing rooms" nearby now, and have for years. It's disgusting and a health risk. How such a large sport facility could have been built without any toilet or washing area is a mystery -- if she had anything to do with that it's not a source of pride.

Education is directly controlled by the Education Dept. And anyway, since she doesn't even bother to translate a couple of paragraphs of her platform it's obvious she doesn't give a shit about non-Chinese speakers.

My daughter is there in P1. It's apparent the school really prefers foreign kids to go away and considers any "concessions" they make to teaching them at all a vast imposition.

Here goes Alex's election platform then:

Alex Chan was born and raised in Hong Kong. He received univeristy education in Canada and the United States and currently works for an international sourcing company. Alex wants to make Lamma Island a better place to live and to improve business conditions. In the past two years he has been working to protect the Yung Shue Wan harbour as part of the Save Lamma Campaign.

Election Platform:
- Establish channels for the residents of Lamma and Po Toi to participate in public decision making process; push for full democracy by universal suffrage.
- Strenghthen quality of life and tourism by enhancing natural beauty and cultural richness.
- Improve village drainage systems and eliminate sites for mosquito breeding.
- Prevent haphazard planning and construction that would cause health hazards.
- Push for improving of marine water quality of Yung Shue Wan and the beaches in Lamma Island.
- Upgrade the quality of medical care available on islands.
- Push for building a community centre in Yung Shue Wan with the facilities most wanted by the residents.

I myself, like Alan, am concerned (to say the least) about all that building stuff she proposes.

However, the toilets and change room at the football field is a brilliant idea - same for the entertainment/cultural centre.

Urr... can anyone see why there is a need to expand the O Tsai typhoon shelter? I mean, the current typhoon shelter only has water in it half of the time...

Sherlock {L_WROTE}:
It seems much about personal effort and ability, which we don't know about yet.

Judging by how many 'community organisations' she is involved in, it could even be about how many people you know!! (Still, it's interesting to note how she manages to be the vice-president on so many organisations!)
