I read with interest the article with Alex Chan in SCMP. I found his statement about what the residents want with reclamation a bit presumptous and not wholly accurate of the entire community, when he stated that Lamma residents were against reclamation. I don't believe this is the case I think many were against the previous scheme.

Practically some reclamation is required to provide the sewer and stabilise the existing adhoc sea wall. I like the revised scheme but contrary to comments from save lamma on this I also want the new beach and well designed sea wall not a platform.

A platform is environmentally unfriendly as it needs piles, and due to the proximity of the village and noise and vibration bored piles would be required, which causes significant spoil to be excavated (pumped from the hole). To avoid digging up silt with reclamation there is method whereby grout is injected to the silt to form a stable footing for the fill. IMPO of course.

PS It may haver been the Standard where Alex was featured, but one today's papers.

Link to the deep cement mixing method, which obviates dredging and disturbing the crap from the bottom of the sea.

It'd be less confusing if you posted as legless when you're pretending to be a civil engineer or making tirades against Filipinos, and used Sherlock when you're pretending to be a patriotic Chinese, and Shitfer when you're just being gratuitously offensive. What's the point of having different personae if you don't keep them separate?

The whole Island is littered with construction waste (formwork, unused steel bars, rusting concrete mixers etc.)

Would either of them like to comment on what they are going to do about it.

I have a very simple solution - get these morons hassling old ladies selling veggies etc on Mainstreet out to find out who owns the properties and start hassling them instead.

Simple solution to this would be a new law requiring anyone who builds a house to clean up. No Occupation Permit till they do.

Yu, along with almost all other DAB candidates, has failed to respond to invitations to appear and explain her platform by RTHK, and also ignored L-G's questionnaire. (L-G has Alex's answers for his next zine.) As Yu shares her office with a construction company, she would be in a good position to sort it out -- though she hasn't got around to it in the 6 years she's had so far.

Having a new legislation is one thing, but I think getting people to act according to it could be quite difficult!

If our new Disctrict Councilor doesn't respond to this call, there's always Legco election in 2004...

That's why I personally usually steer clear of major political parties at the polls - their candidates often have to follow party lines, so your vote for the candidate translates to a vote for the party's politics.

Edited twice for all sorts of typos and sucky grammar.

I'm just being silly now, but since Lamma Fun Day coincides with District Council voting day, why isn't there a voting booth at Power Station Beach so we get to engage in all kinds of great local activities in one go?

Samson,
I've suggested this twice already to Alex Chan, but there's only one voting place in all of North Lamma, our Town Hall, and they wouldn't even discuss setting up additional places. And there might be too many non-conformist (meaning non-DAB) voters at the Fun Day, so they definitely wouldn't like to see a voting booth at the Fun Day...

"Having Fun on Election Day" is OK, but they'd probably prefer us non-Chinese not to vote at all...

Hey, like my Fun Day ad banner at the top? I sliced and diced the official Fun Day poster...

LG thanks ezine is top quality again and in particular your interview with Alex Chan and I believe that Alex is the best option for Lamma and should be given the opportunity to be DC.

In the Guide on Voting leaflet it says "the entrance to this polling station is not accessible to those who have difficulty in walking, including those on a wheelchair".

What is there, one step an inch high? They'd rather make this disclaimer than bother with helping disabled people to exercise their rights, just a slab of wood to make a ramp would suffice. So don't look for any effort to make voting more convenient.

That's quite funny in a not so funny way - considering I did raise the issue of disability access on and around Lamma earlier in this topic...

Hence the relatively low voting rate in HK, I guess!!

Perhaps we can see all non-DAB voters as "conforming to non-conforming"...

Did anyone catch the article on SCMP last Sunday (Nov 16) re: DAB Chairman Tsang Yuk-sing's view on how non-Chinese residents should not get a vote in HK? Simply ridiculous if you ask me! (And hey, at least Pauline Hanson has an acceptable dress-sense!)

Lamma-Gung {L_WROTE}:

LG, with all that slicing and dicing, me thinks you may be a psycho-killer-maniac on the inside... Meanwhile, you may have noticed that I like the Fun Day banner so much that I've sliced and diced up your post in my reply

If there is an unofficial poll allowing everybody to vote, then Alex will win 99 to 1. The end result would probably be the opposite, what does it tell us? shame shame shame.

I met Alex canvassing in Main Street this morning. He said that of the 2000 registered voters, 180 were English-speaking (you need to tick your language preference when applying). I think he will easily sweep that demographic. He also said that the DAB has about 300 "iron votes", people who are personally or otherwise invested in the candidate. So if there is a 50% turnout, Alex needs to get about 80% of the uncommitted Chinese vote. If there was a 100% turnout, that comes down to about 56%. Which explains Yu's low-key (invisible) campaigning style -- she doesn't want to create any buzz at all about the election, as the more who vote, the less chance she has.

The usual turn out rate is about 20% only, that means a mere 400 people. And she gets 300 votes, the result is obvious.

I actually saw Lammadonna Yu for the very first time this afternoon just outside the polling centre (does that also count as a celeb sighting?) - and boy, was I in shock! I'm not commenting on her appearance or the graphics artists for her posters... but Yu in person looks nothing like the poster girl!

P.S. Her real face wasn't numbered...
