All your problems will disappear if you learn to love screens. See an analyst.

Screens I will never like - they make me think of prisons. Anyway, I just don't think they'd work in our flat - we'd have to screen all the bathroom windows as well as one or two in the bedroom and I just can't see how the things work in any case - you never open those windows again?!

The mozzie net...maybe I screwed up - perhaps should have got a bigger one though it was the largest they had of that type (at the China products store in Jordan, 250 bucks). It's the sort that hangs from a central hook. It covers the bed OK, but only just, so your face is close to the net. Which means if there's a mozzie out there it buzzes so close to your face it's almost as bad as not having a net. And it can sound like it's actually inside the net - which is maybe worse than not having a net. And then, you can't simply reach out for that glass of water or to switch a light on/off - there's a net in the way! And...how about that time you've had a few too many...and you get up, still a bit wobbly for a trip to the bathroom...and it all comes tumbling down. Not convinced!

I was kind of hoping someone had found a bio-friendly mozzie destroyer. It's about time someone invented one.

In my place we have the usual aluminium framed windows, two hinged vertically like doors, one at the top hinged horizontally.

So I've glued screens on the top one (which I usually leave open) and one of the bottom. I can open the third window, reach out and pull or push the others closed or open. I cut holes for the handle/latches on the frame.
Been doing this for over 10 years, it's not a problem.
Costs about $5 and 20 minutes work per window.

It's either that or seal your windows and use aircon 24/7.

If you own the place, you might invest in removable screens, built to order.

I've never understood why in Hong Kong, known as a malarial pest hole until 50 years ago, (Happy Valley cemetery is full of malaria victims) doesn't have screens as a standard fitting. In Thailand, a much poorer country, homes are much cheaper but designed for the climate and efficiently and conveniently screened.

If there were, this wouldn't be true:
http://archive.idrc.ca/books/reports/1996/01-07e.html
"According to the World Health Organization there are 300 to 500 million clinical cases of malaria each year resulting in 1.5 to 2.7 million deaths."

Agreed!

Our windows are different - we don't have the horizontal window at the top of our main bedroom windows - just large windows that open outwards on vertical hinges. Yes, a removeable frame could work - might look into that.

I saw in Shenzhen you can get screens made to measure that have a very thin flexable plastic/metal frame which attaches to a magnetic tape/stripe you stick to the inner window frame. Threfore you can just pull them off when not needed and you dont have to do any drilling. I just use transparent double-sided adhesive tape, cost $6 from the local hardware store,& plastic mesh, also cheap, by the sq foot. March - May always seem the worst months, esp. without AC on to chill them out

Started getting excited there for a mo - but it's for outside use only. Will do some Googling...
