I know there was a photo some time ago of the beautiful red dragonfly. Here is a more modestly dressed one.

Hmmm..... I think I know.
"What's that stupid idiot with the big eye looking at me for"

BTW, there are about 70 different species of Dragonfly in HK, and about 50 of the very similar Damselflies.

Have found that if you find one at rest & disturb it, it will invariably come back to the same spot.
Early morning & early evening are good times to catch pictures of them, round about mosquito time, but also, harder to find but nonetheless there, and often stationary througout the day & easier to photograph.

Is that the real unenhanced colour? Remarkable.

The colour was tweaked very slightly, but very very close to natural - similar to the next couple - below

A Red One (Orthetrum pruinosum neglectum) just for you.

Great photo again.
I have just learnt that the male is red and the female is an "olivaceous brown" and golden in sunshine. It looks like the red one and the first are the same dragonfly perhaps.

The Red one shown above is about 30% larger than the Olive one shown above.
The Purplish & the Olive ones are about the same size.

and Sheila, I apologise as I don't mean to make you blush coyly anymore than you are already doing so from L-B's remarks, but I think this is the pairing you are referring to!!

Nothing coy about that. There is no ambiguity in the photo, certainly there is no Golden dragonfly involved.

Is it your photo? I looked up your 'neglectum' and got the red/male : golden/female information.

Yes the photo was taken by the "stream" half way between Tai Peng & Pak Kok about 3 weeks ago.

In the photo above, I think the female is a little jaded from the experience.
Below is a photo (not mine) of the female (neglectum) in all her glory (yr first photo above may be the female)

BTW the Purplish & the Olive ones may also be a couple as they were seen interacting together, although I didn't see any conclusion to what may have been courtship.
