Ed Banger {L_WROTE}:
Aaahhh, the innocence of anyone thinking that any business on Lamma would actively try and attract customers through anything more than opening their doors and sticking a hand-written paper on the wall.
The only two places which try anything are the Banyan Tree and the Island Bar.
The Village bakery could do a lot to improve itself and justify their high prices but so long as people accept the status quo and weekend tourists can't walk 20 yards without stuffing some sort of vile crap in their mouth.
The only person who gets any kudos on the island is the woman who spends 9 dollars on a packet of 20 individually wrapped crackers, 3 dollars on a packet of skewers and 15 dollars on a jar of peanut butter and sits on the corner opposite the old Y2K. She carefully opens the packets of crackers, smears peanut butter on them, sticks a 2" long piece of skewer down the middle, puts the wrapper over the top and stands them up in a piece of styrofoam. All she has to do is wait for the tourists who have managed to get from the waffle shop alive before needing more food and selling them for 5 dollars.

Love it!

Crackers and peanut butter on a stick???? That always gets a laugh from me

is it really peanut butter? i thought it should be the traditional "crackers with maltose" (麥芽糖) which was a very popular kid's snack back in the 50s and 60s in Hongkokng.

According to my in-house Chinese culture expert, Lamma-Por, it's actually honey in the middle. She grew up with this snack as well and remembers it fondly from her childhood.

I've tried it from that smart lady, on Lamma-Por's recommendation. I can't tell what the fuss is all about, it's kind of a weird, sticky, crumbly, salty snack. You probably have to grow up with it to really like it. Something as weird as peanut-butter-jelly sandwiches, marmite or even deep-fried Mars bars can probably only be appreciated if you've had them as a child, as they seem and taste horrible to everybody else.

What about the guy who sells curry fishballs and only has a vocabulary of "ga lai yue dan" repeated over and over again?

On the topic of over pricing!

Well, the Deli Lamma Lan Kwai Fong actually has some very nice set lunches, 5 daily changing sets, including soup or salad and soft drink/tea/coffee, all for just $70, a great deal in that neighbourhood.

Sets like these would be pretty welcome in the Yung Shue Wan rest. as well and save guests quite some money at lunch. So their LKF place is actually much cheaper than the Lamma one, at least at lunchtime.

I think the poor guy's brain has been affected by the Indian cuckoo's non-stop four note mantra. Who's next?

Email from Tam the Baker, ex-Lammaite and ex-baker of the Village Bakery:

"I have been reading the reviews on the bakery and i do apologise to everyone on behalf of Charlie and the sales staff and myself, but it is not their fault nor mine that the quality has dropped from the good old days.

I am no longer allowed to take any part in the endeavour because of the good old HK Immigration laws and this is very upsetting as Charlie financed my dream of setting up and running a bakery producing excellent quality baked goods for the people of Lamma.

Now that i am no longer allowed to take any part it is very near impossible to find and hire staff with the skills needed to produce these goods.

So poor Charlie has had to do with what staff and skills he can find locally. And having very little knowledge of the industry himself he is in a bit of a pickle, so he requires as much support as possible from the community on Lamma.

The bakery will never be ready because he just can't find the skills and when he does the HK Immigration refuse their visas. So go ahead and do a review yourself and give him some support!

Yours,
TAM the Baker"

Good news about the Village Bakery:

Prafull of the Deli Lamma has taken over on May 1 and will be making numerous improvements to this formerly fine place. It has been abandoned by many Lammaites (including myself), becoming just another "normal" HK bakery, pleasing mostly the soft/light/sweet bread lovers, plus a few cakes/pastries at very high prices, IMHO.

Prafull is encouraging feedback and wishes from Lammaites. How could the Village Bakery be improved and what should they offer to attract more customers, like yourself?

A professional, restaurant-quality coffee machine has been announced already.

By the way, does anybody have a new contact for Tam the Baker above?

He doesn't answer his old email and this forum email anymore...

<HR>
So, what could the Village Bakery do to improve itself and what should they offer to attract more new and former customers?

I would love to see a real 100% wholemeal bread

Yes, wholemeal and wholegrain bread would be marvellous. Also, better French sticks and baguettes, and 'burger buns' !

Ditto to the wholegrain bread! The oatmeal bread they have is pretty good, but a "real" wholegrain bread (rather than the "lite grain" stuff they currently have) would be nice.

Their "rye" bread could use some body to it too. At the moment it's "rye lite" bread: dark brown with no real texture or substance.

There's the rant for now.

I would love a hearty sourdough bread; pretty tough item to come by in Hong Kong.

If they sell fruit pies, it would be nice if they started from whole fruit rather than using fruit compote (I almost wrote compost) out of a can.

Decent cream cakes with real, fresh cream inside, like they used to do when the bakery first opened.

This they do now - but they only make 3-4 a day and by the time I slope out of bed and drip to the ferry, they are all gone. I gave up with buying bread altogether and got a bread machine. Flour from Citysuper (from Wessex), evian, hovis yeast, and a splash of sea salt and heh presto, great bread when ever I want it. Just wish I would get round to making it some days and not keep remembering to do it whilst sat at work having had another rubbish sarnie.
