Well the new bar / restaurant is called the Beer Garden, I had a meal there last night with my wife and a few friends and I must say it was absolutely delicious, Dee pa (Amah singhs son from the old spicey) did the cooking and it was just like being back in Spicey, which in my opinion was one of the best indian restaurants (food wise) in HK. Very reasonable prices and fantastic food. I would urge anyone who enjoyed the spicey to go there. The range of food is not as much as the old spicey had but just ask the chef for your favorite and I am sure he will accommodate you. They also have a Thai menu which I have not tried yet but if it is as good as the indian food it should be excellent.

Two thumbs up from me. :thumb-up: :thumb-up:

Went there the other day. A few comments

Food was nice but far too spicy. Large bits of green chilli....couldn't taste the flavours as a result. If they cut down on that the food would be better.

The tables are far too small. If you are sharing Indian food, you need a lot more room.

Need a smoking section or more to the point a nonsmoking section. I had three smokers around me....no escape.

Come on folks...I don't want your dogs sticking their noses in my food. Leave them at home.

Other than that it is great! :D

Be nicer still if they made smoking and dogs compulsory!

Compulsory?
Wow, there's a most daring and controversial idea! You're welcome in our restaurant ONLY if you're a smoker and bring your dog along!

This might actually take off in a dog-loving place like Lamma where the smoking ban is rarely enforced so far, setting Beer Garden apart from the 20+ restaurants of Yung Shue Wan!
I might mention this daring idea to the Chinese owner when I'll be interviewing him soon, hopefully...

Dory, is this really what you meant?

+1000000. There's some really frickin' delusional dog owners out there. I don't know how this "it's ok to bring a dog to a restaurant" thing got started, but really, knock it off.

I enjoyed the beer garden. Had fish n chips there the other night and Indian - both were delicious...

Despite the German theme 'beer garden' - not one German dish on the menu :(

Hope they do well and that they won't struggle too much in the winter months/ rain season/ summer months with their outdoor-only dining.

whats happened to the outside of the beer garden? all the wooden decor has been removed and it looks slightly bare. they put alot of effort into that design can't imagine that they would of removed it willingly!

The Beer Garden was shut down around Christmas, after less than two months of legal operation because of neighbours' complaint letter to several govt.departments.

This is a first for Yung Shue Wan, as far as I know, and I really wonder what the letter said?

Any news on the future of the Beer Garden?

It's reopening today, April 1st, at 4pm, according to the poster on their wall.
I've called them up to confirm that it's not an April Fool's joke.

I wonder how they got the objection letter signed by 31 residents cleared up with the relevant govt. depts. and the complainants.

Same food as before they say! I'll check it out for sure, like any new place.

Almost sold out tonight, on the very first night, almost all ten or so tables looked occupied, far better than most other restaurants along Main Street, often with just a single table occupied.

Well, they seem to have gotten up to a fantastic start, former regulars returning in droves? How was the food and service?

In the meantime, the Lamcombe has also reopened tonight, under the new management of the landlord, while I've met at least two former Lamcombe waiters yesterday, working hard in the Lammarina construction site nowadays....

How's the food?
We've only tried the "Beer Garden Eye Opener" full British breakfast so far, and the Eggs Benedict and it was all pretty good. The full breakfast was bigger than the two of us sharing it could finish!

Little problems in getting all our cutlery and salt, but the service was fine overall and Hung-Kee is the kind of jovial, personable, bilingual host you need in a neighbourhood place like this, as they don't get too many tourist as they're away from Main Street. Even on Easter Monday afternoon the place was far from full, but in the evenings it seems to fill up frequently.

You can rate this place now in the restaurant poll, at the top of this topic.

Owner Hung-Kee and his son Sky seem to be running a very nice and already very successful place, with Amar Singh's son (ex-Spicy Island) in the kitchen preparing the mostly Indian food. As a little favour for an old friend, I've scanned their menu:

Had a terrible meal in here the other day. The quality of the food has really plummeted. We ordered chicken karai and it was nothing like anything I have ever tasted. Bright red sauce which looked like ketchup and sweet. Sauce + chicken only (chicken was tough), not a vegetable in sight. Maybe it had all been food processed down. We also ordered okra masala and the okra was totally cooked down so that it was disintegrating, and the sauce was insipid. Still doing bread well, however. I notice the Indian lady who used to be in the kitchen seems to have left. I imagine this is the reason for the change. Shame.

We had dinner there on Sat 21Apr. Chicken Karai was not at all a Karai and the Lamb Biriyani > was not like a biriyani too ! But the Garlic Naan was good.
We need value for the money. Beer Garden, if you value your customers then change is inevitable.

And I request LG to enable an additional box for voting / rating i.e 'Poor!

Still no improvement. By mistake we went there again on 30Jun Sat.
What ever flavor of curry you order the gravy is same (example Chicken Madras, Mutton Rogan Josh etc). Are they simply cheating the people who (are not of subcontinent origin) frequently dine there by making them drunk thus numbing their taste bud ? !
It is damn easy to bring in a chef from India if they are serious .....!

Made the mistake of eating a take out from the Beer garden on Saturday night - Oh dear - how standards have plummeted! The curries tasted as if they just had 'Curry Powder / Marsala' thrown in - no aroma or real taste to any of them. My son refused to eat the Chicken Makhani ! A first!

Containers half empty (or should it be half full?) and the Channa Marsala simply consisted of chick peas were drowning in bright red oil!

This is the second bad experience this month. Dare say that we will have to seek alternatives and hope that they find a new / replacement chef who knows how to cook Indian food.

Shame - they used to serve quite decent meals.
