On 5 Feb, when I walked pass the Pak Kok Old Village outside 58-60, I just saw an awful scene with the following pictures. Someone was trying to kill three trees by the side of the road. And he was even making a statement saying he has the right to remove them because these trees are obstructing his sea view.

In the statement, it said about the sea view. Damn, does the sea view matter him ? No, definately. If it matters, why would he buy a property with the trees in the front ? If it matters and the trees were grown after he bought the place, why would he not cut them off well before the tree became obstructing. If it really matters, why would he be not knowing the visibility of the harbour is declining year by year ? No matter what he does, the sea view is fading away anyway. So all he says are crap !

And what he has been doing is to torture the trees and makes them die slowly. He is not cutting them. He just removes a ring of the bark. After a long enogh while, he can then be entitled to call the government to send some other people to cut the rotten trees and do the clean up for him. So does the sea view matters, "No" again !!! He rather waits for someone to do the job and free of charge. Pathetic trees killed by a Coward !!!

The police received reports immediately and they are trying to handle this case (as the police already makes another post upon the statement posted by the Murder). But I hope if someone knows a better way to report this case to the proper government department, please let us know.

Hi

The person to whom you should report this to depends on the owner of the land on which the trees are located.

Many trees like this are on government land and the Lands Department take care of them.

They should prosecute in clear cases like this where someone is stupid enough to own up. Try Anthony, he will want pictures and the number of a lamp-post at the location so he can identify the land.

Land Executive Mr. LAI Kwok-wai Tel: 2852 4245
leislc2@landsd.gov.hk;

The police should also take action in cases like this. Certainly I have a friend who was arrested by police for (legally) clearing a footpath.

However it is a slow process. Peer pressure can do a lot. Who is the person who is doing this?

I'd be surprised if the land and trees actually belonged to those who claim it does.

Aside from that, it's an amazingly lazy and stupid way to remove trees.
when the trees are killed they start to rot and can fall onto the path .

if trees have to be removed, you do it in a safe and controlled way.

I live in Pak Kok and found out about this two days ago.

The lands department have been informed, also the Police and also the environmental protection agency.

Robin Savage/Lewis is the man who has done this. He says he has permission from the man who planted the trees 20 years ago. This may be true but I don't think they actually belong to anyone except the government as they are growing (dying now actually) on government land.

He is very blatant in his behaviour and was spotted doing extra chiselling and hammering at the trunks last night.

I seriously hope that we can get him prosecuted.

If there is any way at all to save these trees and you know how to - please post here. I've spoken to a few people and sadly this is the 'best' way to kill a tree. Our best bet is to wait for 2-3 months until it has begun to die and then chop it off under the girdling which will allow it to grow without the roots dying.

I'm so pissed off about this and am slightly concerned I might cause Robin physical harm when I see him. He's bigger than me so it would be silly - tempting though.

You might be able to graft some bark or shoots over the gap.

However, this guy could easily destroy any graft, or poison the tree if he takes a mind to.

The police and Lands Department just go through the motions and rarely if ever prosecute anyone for this, and never act quickly enough to save the trees, so he has little to fear.
(Though if he's not a local, perhaps they won't be afraid to enforce the law in tihs case.)

See http://www.hort.uconn.edu/Ipm/homegrnd/htms/28graft.htm

And
{L_QUOTE}:
http://aces.nmsu.edu/ces/yard/2007/090807.html
When a tree has been damaged by removing a ring of bark, the tree may die depending on how completely it was girdled. Removal of even a vertical strip of bark less than one-fourth the circumference of the tree will harm the tree, but not kill the tree. When the patch of bark is one-half or greater, the chances of tree death increase. Complete girdling (the bark removed from a band completely encircling the tree) will certainly kill the tree.

The reason for damage due to girdling is that the phloem layer of tissue just below the bark is responsible for carrying food produced in the leaves by photosynthesis to the roots. Without this food, the roots ultimately die and cease sending water and minerals to the leaves. Then the leaves die. As you can see from this process, there is a delay period before the roots and top dies. There are some stored foods in the roots and lower trunk that allow the roots to continue functioning for a little while. This delay gives you time in which you can try "repair grafting". Don't wait any longer because the roots will soon run out of food.

Repair grafting, also known as bridge grafting, provides a bridge across the damaged area. This will partially restore some transport of foods to the roots. If this bridge can carry enough food across the wound, the roots will survive and continue sending water and minerals through deeper tissues to the leaves. The leaves will then manufacture food that permits the tree to develop new tissues to close over the wound and restore normal plant processes.

To bridge the graft, first clean the wound by removing sharp edges and any bark that is pulled loose from the trunk. Then remove some healthy branches or twigs from the same tree. These should be about thumb size in diameter (or smaller if the tree is small) and one to three inches longer than the width of the wound on the trunk. Trim one side of each end to flatten it so it will lie flat against the trunk of the tree. Cut the other side of each end to form a wedge shape. Then cut flaps into the bark on the trunk by making two parallel cuts through the bark, starting from the wound. Make this cut a little longer than the bridges you have prepared. Do not cut the between these two parallel cuts (leave the flap attached at the end away from the wound). Carefully lift the flap and insert the bridge under the flap. The bark on the bridge should extend slightly under this flap (no cleaned wood exposed). At the edges of the trimmed bark of the bridge and under the flap of the trunk are thin layers of phloem and cambium. If these layers of the trunk and the bridge successfully fuse together, creating the graft union, the flow of food to the roots will be reestablished and the tree may survive.

An important point to understand is that the flow of material in the phloem is only downward. That means, don't put the bridge piece into the graft upside down. Mark the top part of the bridge before you cut it from the tree so that you will not become confused when you form the graft.

Recently, I came across large and freshly cut trees around old looking grave on grave yard above Lo So Shing. What was interesting the place was marked with typical Police Crime Scene tape. My thought was there was illegal cutting and then the Police was investigating the scene. So maybe they are not that inefficient in reacting to this kind of offences. I have to admit it looked strange as this was very remote place and the removal could hardly be noticed. Not to mention the Govt. would not challenge the removal of the tree from the burial place.

They'll file a report.
Let me know if anyone is prosecuted.

Hi there

actually, I found out yesterday that the peson who planted the tree did not give him permission. He thought he just wanted to lob a few branches off, not kill the trees. These trees were planted in honour of his childrens birth 20 years ago so he is really upset by what has happened.

The Pak Kok tree murder has since gone back and hacked the middle one even further to make sure it really will die. I have pics, so will post later. The police have asked him to stop ... but once they went he continued hacking.

The police don't care about trees, but if he disrespects them he might get into trouble.

The trees will be dead though.

We are going to attempt to repair the trees - someone from within the village is going to talk to Robin and ask him to please leave them alone.

A tree surgeon could easily remove the top 4-6 feet of the trees to allow Robin 'harbour access'.

The general feeling in PK is still incredible anger - funnily Robin said everyone would forget about it in a week . . . NOT YET and unlikely to.

Perhaps it's time for a Pak Kok outing .... to see the damage done and to keep the pressure on this cretin.

At this point we should step back and leave the resolution of this to the neighbours affected and the police and other government departments.

If you want to apply pressure, I suggest contacting the various departments who should be protecting the countryside. Engaging in personal vilification here will achieve nothing except to bring disrepute to the forum.
