The Sri Lankan buffet in The Waterfront has started on Monday nights. For menu and info, see above.

It was almost full, on a Monday night, a fine success! Lamma-Por & I liked it a lot, not even enough time to shoot more photos.

Birthday party for Lamma stalwart Joyce of Jing Jing on Sat afternoon, Aug 13, 2016:
Free buffet & drinks for all invited guests, prepared by Marlon their master chef.

These are some of the many reasons that Jing Jing's Bar is such a friendly, welcoming place to meet your old and new friends...

Carlo brought in his famous, huge paella pan from opposite's "Carlito's Away", the Spanish tapas place.

By the way, the Spanish place - Carlito's Away - is taken over every Sun and Mon night, when Carlito's is closed, by Jane Ram the Gardener who founded and runs Taipeng Spice. She writes:

"Vibrant flavours from Taipeng Spice make a great start to the week.
Assorted vegetarian curries and freshly steamed Basmati rice are available from 6pm onwards on Sunday and Monday (August 28 & 29) at the Tapas Bar.
Also IDDLIS plus coconut chutney, gunpowder & sambar for early birds. For sweet endings, few things beat delicious Indian-inspired puddings (and these are super-healthy).
All takeaway or eat-in. Pre-order to be sure of your favourites. Food can be collected from Taipeng New Village by prior arrangement.
If you would like to supply your own containers, please drop them off at my home by Saturday morning at the latest. Phone 2982 0330."

Having tasted some of her choices myself, I can highly recommend them! Bring your own container, take home and put in fridge, enjoy the same or next day.

Just got informed by The Waterfront Bar & Rest. that their new Sri Lankan set dinner has moved from Monday to Friday nights.

Highly recommended from our own experience. The only Sri Lankan food available on Lamma, I think!?

From Taipeng Spice, every Sun/Mon taking over the Spanish place (opposite Jing-Jing) from 6:30pm:

"Rain or shine, Taipeng Spice will brighten your Sunday and Monday evenings this weekend (September 4 & 5). From 6pm onwards, a selection of home-made traditional spicy and mild vegetarian curries from South India will be available to takeaway or eat on the spot.

Iddlis with fresh coconut chutney, gunpowder and sambar will be available for early birds. Other favourites include Garlic Curry a pungent mix of coconut crème, tamarind, , turmeric, mustard seed, chilli and urud dhal (white lentils) plus fresh curry leaves. (see attached picture)

Red Rasam is the ideal hot weather tonic. This original combination of tomato, lentils, tamarind, black pepper and a constellation of freshly ground spices is topped with fresh coriander leaves.

Everybody loves tender Okra, lifted out of the ordinary with the help of fresh coconut and fragrant spices.

Call them Eggplant, Aubergine or Baingan, they are simply delicious stuffed with toasted peanuts and almost 20 spices all carefully balanced for maximum impact.

Black tea transforms humble Chickpeas with the help of fresh ginger, lime juice and coriander leaves plus selected spices to tempt the appetite in hot weather.

Cabbage is unrecognisable when finely shredded and gently stewed with turmeric and fresh curry leaves plus mild but fragrant spices.

This week’s Indian-inspired puddings include Coconut creme with raisins & unsulphured apricots and Figs with 100% cacao chocolate.

Freshly cooked extra-long grain Basmati Rice is available.

All these recipes are prepared without dairy products or wheat.

Advance orders are welcome and food can be collected from my house in Taipeng by prior arrangement. If you would like to use your own containers, please deliver them to me by Saturday afternoon at the latest. If you are looking for a sturdy stainless steel traditional tiffin carrier, check out the selection at Kam Lee, 60-62 Bonham Strand, Sheung Wan."

The Waterfront writes:

"For this Friday (tomorrow, Mid-Autumn holiday 2016) evening only, Ira will NOT be cooking Sri Lankan food."

Next week (Sep 23) it'll be back to normal, Sri Lankan every Friday!

Yes, I'm one of these highly annoying people occasionally taking pictures of their food. But I only publish them when it's exceptional and I really enjoyed eating it afterwards! A regular late-lunch spot, Jing Jing's daily set menu, plus a glass of white house white (my daily ration, single glass only). As long as Marlon is their master chef, I'll remain a regular. We just love his food, some of the very best on Lamma!

The people you meet in there, even on a random weekday afternoon like yesterday, invites chats and friendly interactions: A clown, a Lamma Book Club organiser, two chatty Spanish tourists, and Mrs. Carlos and her 9-weeks-old baby, sleeping like an angel all through our conversations.

Few places on Lamma call up their regulars and invite them for free lunch and drinks, like Joyce did for her recent birthday. The place was absolutely full, even Carlos from "Carlito's Away" opposite brought in his very famous, colourful, original, tasty paella.

Lo So Kitchen has moved from the far end of the Sok Kwu Wan restaurant strip (just before the Tin Hau Temple) to close to the ferry pier! 3 generations of power women running/decorating the new place, the Chan family and friends.

Photo by Mrs. MoonFolks aka Violet Chammi, our frequent Lamma Artist of the Month who painted the old and new locations with her amazing, joyful artworks full of whimsy and wonder.

Check it out! More photos coming soon, as soon as my bike and I'll make it over the hill to South Lamma again, hopefully to the official opening party!

From last night's Fond Farewell to Kumar, a little collage I made from 14+ years of Kumar pictures and hung in the Island Bar last night: from top left, clockwise:

Brad Tarr & Kumar Binney, new & former Island Bar managers,
a rare Kumar Karaoke moment, or just a speech,
thanking Lamma for the Tsunami Relief fundraiser,
the only Kumar-being-smooched image I've seen,
the only beardless Kumar photo I've seen in 15 years of knowing him (Movember fundraiser).
Center: Kumar's 50th birthday, just a few years ago.

Next farewell: Thu evening in The Waterfront!
All welcome, free drink & snacks, 6-8pm.
From 8pm, Quiz Night in The Island Bar. These 2 venues are still co-ordinating their events perfectly timewise, even under new separate management!

Another art exhibition in Banyan Bay Cafe (Cath's Bar): Senior Lammaite Angela Mary Bhana.
All are for sale, all originals and very reasonably priced. A large percentage of the sales will go to to charity!
Stop by on YSW Main Street and have a closer look!

About 4 exhibitions per year, next one will be Rambler's macro photography, early next year.

All original paintings for sale at really good prices!
Angela will move to live with family in Australia soon, so this sale will help this major move after decades of living on Lamma.

Exhibition will last till end of the year, to be replaced by Rambler's "Planet Pandora" macro-photography of Lamma's wildlife!

As many of you might have noticed, Good Luck Thai closed down a few weeks ago.

Salim, owner of Best Kebab and Bombay, will take over with 3 partners, including Johnnie (ex-Waterfront) who managed Good Luck Thai for 19 days not long ago. The type of food and name are not fixed yet, depending on staff recruitment in progress.

Opening sometime in Nov, if he can find cook and staff, the major problem of many restaurants on Outlying Islands.

In the meantime, there'll be a 1st anniversary party in Bombay - free food is rumoured - next Thursday, but details tbc.
