The Village Rep Election will be held in the afternoon of Saturday, January 13. This year we have 3 candidates: District Councillor Yu Lai Fan, and a couple of elderly gentlemen. Only one of these, retired ship’s captain Fong Man Shung, has bothered sending out a manifesto in English. But he proposes a massive building programme on Lamma, including a new bike park by the library; covering and widening of the ferry pier approach; a ‘government complex and public facilities’, and more public toilets, including one at Lamma Winds and one on the way to the beach. He also advocates a better ferry schedule with at least one extra overnight sailing(s). Does anyone know what election platforms (if any) the other two are promising?

At least you can vote. In our village there's only one candidate, so no election. Our village representative lives two houses away and in six years has never spoken to me (or my wife, who is Chinese). So I'm sure he's doing a good job of representing us residents.

Anyway, what party are your other candidates?
I wonder if your Fong is related to Fung Lui.
And his platform sounds identical to Yu's. She'll "advocate" building anything at any time for any reason. Fortunately, their powers are limited. And as for overnight sailings, what a great idea. That's been "advocated" for the last 20 years and except for a few weeks' trial last year, we're no closer. So while I'd vote for him on the principle of anyone except Yu, I wouldn't expect much.

The list of candidates is here:
http://www.had.gov.hk/vre/eng/elections/2007listcan.html#islands

A Word file, with lots of tables, so difficult to paste here.

Thanks for these interesting facts, guys.

It's strange, I was doing a bit of research on these elections and asked Lammadonna for her manifesto and platform. She didn't have anything at all, saying that it's not permitted to have anything written about it and that the govt. doesn't allow it, only verbal promotion is allowed. But there's her banner on the fence at the VV Parking Lot...

Something probably got lost in the translation by Lamma-Por...

The <a href="http://www.eac.gov.hk/en/village/vr_guide.htm">Guidelines on Election-related Activities in respect of Village Representative Elections</a> don't say that, of course.

In fact , last week I got a letter telling me there would be no election because there was only one candidate. This did include an information sheet with the candidate's photo and his "platform", one paragraph with some platitudes about serving the villagers.

However, the guidelines do talk about "Fair and Equal Treatment of Candidates by the Print Media". So for the incumbent, it's better to say nothing at all as any publicity she gets should be balanced by equal time for the other candidates.

Well, the Lamma-zine is not a print media and there don't seem to be any guidelines for Internet media...

I'd love to give all three candidates for Yung Shue Wan equal treatment, if I could get in touch with all of them and arrange a translator. Too much trouble, it seems...

Has anybody seen any pamphlets from the other two candidates besides the one Foxy described?

There are actually six candidates for YSW.

Three for Indigenous Representative:
Sham Chung Hei (Chef)
Fong Chin Hung (Securities Dealer)
Ng Wai Pong (Surveyor)

And three for Resident Representative:
Fong Man Sang (Retired)
Ng Tam Hing (Retired)
Yu Lai Fan (District Council Member)

I just managed to get the campaign leaflet scanned in by somebody living in YSW village. Very interesting.

I wonder if we'll see some more posters on the walls soon. I think there's one for Fong Man Sang on Main Street? He seems to be the only one fo the 6 candidates who seems to advertise to voters...

Interesting results in the election for resident representative for Yung Shue Wan.

The guy who did the most advertising, Fong Man Sang, got the LEAST votes, only 26.
To nobody's surprise, Ms. Yu Lai Fan - Lammadonna - won by a huge margin with 153 votes. Ng Tam Hing managed a respectable 82 votes.
