By the way, about 15 years ago if I recall correctly, there was an attempt to chop this tree to within an inch of its life. It was saved by physical intervention, I think it may have been Roz Keep. Good luck, please save our Banyan!

It'd be great if the prof could take a look at other important trees around the village and draw up a protected list. Maybe it could help make it harder for the axe men to hack branches off whenever they feel like it.

there was a huge banyan (in front of the public toilet) died on last last sunday in TaiPeng!
after the black rain signal on sat (19/4),
villager near-by told me that, she heard a thunder like sound in the morning and found the tree crump on the field.
obviously the banyan broke on the root.
an old man beliefs that the tree might be 200 years old.
i can say this banyan is 3 times the size of that in main street.
i asked "how can a big tree collapse in this way?"
then i saw a sewage outlet next to it, i think the root underneath might have been soaked in dirty water and totally rotten without notice.
i feel very very sorry!

I have the same thoughts. Aside from the rotted roots immediately beneath the stump, the tree appears to have been in perfect health. I think that the sewage (graywater) outlet beside the tree was almost certainly connected to, if not directly responsible for its demise. The soil beneath the tree was almost certainly damp all the time because of this outflow. What a shame that a tree that has lived so long would perish because of the thoughtless design of a house that was probably built only 20 or 30 years ago. I have been too busy but I've been meaning to photograph the situation and post the photos in the forum. I think its an important issue that must be brought to light so that it will be taken into consideration in the design of future housing areas.
