It will make a difference to the safety of the occupants of an emergency vehicle travelling at speed.

Sure, but wouldn't it make more sense to add 50cm on. It just seems like they are doing it in stages so that next year they can do the whole job again to add an extra 20 cm.

I'm worried about the crap they'll leave around when they do the job.

Snake Path {L_WROTE}:
Alan,

Did you know that they're going to widen the Sok Ku Wan footpath? I saw a sign dated from October saying that they're adding 30 cm to make the path 180 cm wide, between Hung Shing Yeh and Lo So Shing.

30 cm? What's the point?

That came up last year. See <a href="http://www.lamma.com.hk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=468">this posting</a> and my web page with maps and photos.

Short version:
Officially: the tourists are crowded. In reality: pour more concrete = profit for the construction moguls. There is a budget for construction, so they have to think of something to spend it on.

1.8m is a commonly accepted minimum Government standard, they won't do it twice.

They've done it three times since I've been here. The last time they spent over a year and did it end to end, and fucked up HSY beach with the gravel they delivered by barge there into the bargain. Now they're going to break it up, chuck it down the hillside, and do it again. If you've ever been on it, it's 98% showroom condition.

Alan {L_WROTE}:
Today some leaflets from Yu Lai Fan appeared in my postbox

This Tai Penguin havn't got it yet... surely it doesn't take Lai Fan & co that long to track up the hill?

Alan {L_WROTE}:
The large colour pamphlet was all Chinese, so I can't comment further on that.

Perhaps another translation job?

Alan {L_WROTE}:
However, I was surprised to find an English enclosure. This basically has her platform, as translated by Samson earlier, and a note from her asking for our votes. So to give her credit, she has finally realised that she needs to reach out to the community.

Good to hear indeed. But what d'ya mean "as translated by Samson"? Lai Fan & co simply copied my work and used it on her English platform? (apart from one little word) I would think it a courtesy for them to email/pm me before their blatant act of copyright infringement went to print, but that hasn't happened  (For the record, I would've said yes for them to use my translation if they bothered asking)

Alan {L_WROTE}:
One discrepancy in the platform, #9 is "Improve road conditions and facilities", which is rather inoffensive. Samson told us that the Chinese version said "widen".

Just found my Introduction to Candidates again, the words translate to "widen" to me...

They have done some sections but not all such as along the flat section after the pagoda to the new pagoda. If they start on a bit they did before such as just after HSY then get your digital camera and email a query. But as they should be 1.8m they won't.

If there is a problem with Contractor's dumping and pollution there are recourses of action to EPD and the Client Department. Did you report the gravel dumping on HSY or the materials dumped at the Police post mention by another poster. Reporting it will get something done if you really care about it.

Curiously, something from Alex came in the mail for me today - but still no sign of anything from Lai Fan's camp!

No, I don't think they actually copied it, but that it's virtually the same.

Who is she trying to kid then. Good that we have your more faithful translation.

Even more curiously now, Lai Fan's neat and slick as a baby's bum brochure came in the post for me today - without the English translation as Alan mentioned... must admit I feel a little ripped off

P.S. Not trying to drag her appearance into the debate again, but she looks more friendly and approachable on the photos in the brochure...

Alan I am a bit curious about what you think improvement of the paths actually means if is not widening and realignment.

That's what they usually mean. However, in many cases that doesn't "improve" the path in a way I or many others who use the paths would agree with. The word also carries the implication that the current "unimproved" path is inadequate, making it seem perverse to oppose the proposed work. Trodden dirt paths are been described as "mud tracks" to make them seem even more in need of "improvement".

I've explained in detail my opposition to specific projects elsewhere.

I'd be quite happy, for instance, for "improvement" in your sense of the stretch of path in front of Yan Yan, or widening the street by taking back shopfronts near Y2K, or just patching eroded parts almost anywhere else. But if improvement means concreting and widening a pleasant footpath in the hills, it's not, in my opinion, improved, but wrecked.

In the post? Mine was unstamped so must have been hand delivered. However, today we got mailed copies of Alex's manifesto, a nicely printed (mostly in green) bilingual one, with the rather informal slogan "Vote Alex" on the cover. The small print said 3000 were printed, a bit more than the number of registered voters here, so I assume every voter will get one.

Good point Alan, after looking at mine again, it too was unstamped - but the postie gave it to me with other mail, so it must've somehow gone through the postal system unstamped.

Got Alex's the day before Lai Fan's.

Somewhat unrelated, but last night I was seated on the table next to Christine Loh's at a Chinese Restaurant in Central! (For those who might not be aware, Loh is one of the supporters of Alex's campaign, and she' currently the Chairwoman of Society of Protection of the Harbour) Does that count as a celebrity sighting I wonder?

Lai Fan's said a whopping 8000 copies printed!!

On other District Council election related matters - the flags tied on the bridge to Yung Shue Wan ferry pier had all deteriorated due to exposure to strong wind - and some had even been blown into the sea...

Wonder if Food and Environmental Hygiene Department/Team Clean will fine the Regislation & Electoral Office & District Council $1500 for each broken flag on the bridge and in the sea?

We've not had either candidate's manifesto or brochure in Pak Kok yet, but Ms. Yu has plastered posters and banners heavily around the pier though.
What are the basic requirements to be eligable to vote?

Sorry to say, Marcus, you might've missed out on voting in the District Council election next Sunday... but below is a little blurp from the Citizen's Party via Lamma Gung back in July...

Lamma-Gung {L_WROTE}:
Email from Citizens Party:
If you want to vote in the coming District Council elections in November, you must submit your forms on or before 16 July 2003.

In HK, if you are permanent residents, you can register as a voter.
- If you have not voted in any elections before, you need to register, so that you can exercise your power.
- If you have moved, and have not yet informed the Registration and Electoral Office, you need to do it immediately.

The registration deadline:
by fax: July 16, 11:59 pm (dated July 16)
by mail: chop on July 16

REGISTRATION IS SIMPLE. Just fill out a one page form which you can get:

-at banks and post offices
-by fax (call the hotline 2891 1001)
-at District Offices

-The Registration and Electoral Office
10/ F Harbour Centre
25 Harbour Road
Wan Chai
Fax: 2891 1180

Perhaps give the Registration and Electoral Office a call very soon - maybe they can sort something out for you for next year's Legco election.

That's a bummer, Marcus. But don't let rejection spoil your day

For eligible voters, don't forget to vote this coming Sunday (Nov 23) at Lamma Island (North) Rural Committee Building at Yung Shue Wan (opposite HSBC); or for Sok Kwu Wan residents, at the Food & Environmental Hygiene Department Offices.

I do have one last minute question to ask: how and when will we find out who's our next District Councillor?
