I've heard that he's trying to get himself together in the Phillippines. A friend of his is taking over the junk - which is falling apart - and hoping to get it brought back to HK for repairs.

Get himself together? Junk falling apart?
Rumours or facts? Please tell us more, bbChris!

I'd love to learn more, as I just got some great antique photos yesterday: Hunter, his junk, Hunter's Beach and his area above it, when it was inhabited. Right now, I'm putting them into another photo gallery for my next e-zine cover story "Exploring the Lost Valley of the Hippies".
I was visiting up there again yesterday, on the way up to the top of the hills in front of the power station.

Hunter seems to be on e-mail these days, we'll have to ask him personally about these rumours. But he only responds to friends, it seems.

I remember Hunter. In fact, I think of him often, wondering how he is doing. I'd like to get in touch with him, and sure he will be happy to hear from me, becuase on the day I left Lamma , he told me to keep in touch. He did give me a friend's contact in the States through which I could get in touch with him, as he was not sure at that point whether he would be leaving Lamma soon, and where he would be going. Unfortunately, after moving a few times in the past 8 years, I lost the piece of paper with that contact on it. If someone know how to get in touch with Hunter, please let me know.

I think Hunter left in 1997 and lives in the Philippines now.
I've sent you his email contacts in a personal email. As a very private man, he might only respond to old friends like yourself. Good luck!

So, what do you remember of the man?

If Hunter wants you to keep in touch May - that should mean he will respond to you via email. You could email me if you want more info. I don't like posting people's private lives online. Especially without their permission.

I posted here to see who keeps in touch with Hunter - they are the ones I'm more interested in speaking to.

Here are a few more photos from the deserted village nowadays, plus antique photos from when it was inhabited.

A few days ago, my first ever email from Hunter arrived, after I sent him the link to my new "Deserted Village Kam Lo Hom" photo gallery. He's still living in the Philippines these days, but his famous junk might return to HK soon.

Hunter: "... My daughter Willow and I are soon going to California and I am giving the 'Long Hai' to a friend from Hong Kong, (name supplied); he plans to bring her back to Hong Kong. It is interesting to here there is something left of my old shore base in Kam Lo Mam.

I've got to get on with town business now ; Love Hunter&Willow"

Hi Lamma-Gung,

I'm glad to hear that Hunter has got in touch with you, and that he is well.

Thank you very much for help sustaining the important part of Lamma's history.

Weird thing about Hunter no disrespect for his veganism, BUT not only did he go orange, so did his dog.

Mind you I guess the dog didn't have any choice in the matter!!

My old thing Jessie is now 12-13-ish and still going strong - though a bit blind.

Really sorry to hear in the e-zine that "Colonel Bobby", the Wang Long Village "village dog" has passed on. Can anyone give me details as he was very special to me. Maybe you hadn't noticed but I gave him an old collar 2 years ago (blue-ish), so that the dog-snatchers might leave him alone.

He was a real terror when he was young, shagged every bitch in YSW and chased every cat.

My dogs (I had two at the time, Jessie & Zorro) used to love racing to the beach with him.

Is Pee-Wee still around, the one that was mandatory when anyone moved into the house next to Raj - I believe Frank (Paul) took him with him when he moved out.

Funny about dogs on Lamma (this should probably be in "Signs you've been here too long"), but old "Lobert" is still alive and well in the Island Bar (actually he belongs to Man Fung), but he must be at least 14 by now - but what a good-natured dog.

Dog with BAD attitude - Lucy's (Diesels) dog - now that's a mean SOB.

When I lived on Lamma, I knew almost every dog by name. A trip to the village, I would stop and talk to everyone of them. I myself had 5 dogs. 2 -- Boy-boy the doberman and Mui-mui the dalmation -- moved to Lamma with me. Then I rescue Puppy and 2 other pups out of the garbage when they were a few days old. One did not survived. Eamon and Kate adopted the other one and I kept Puppy. One Christmas, I adopted Lucky from a Chinese family with many kids. The father was an alcoholic and one time when he was drunk, he hurt the poor dog with an axe. The kids would put drag the dog along only holding onto one of her backlegs. My last couple of years on Lamma, when I was living in what now know as GAIA Valley, the farmer in the next valley called me up one day and asked if I could take his dog. "He has been chasing and killing my cats. If you don't take him, I will just have to kill it myself." He said. Guess what happened? Next thing I know, that dog, I named Ah Choy, was under my roof. Not long after I had taken him in, I found him a home in a garage in the New Territories. He was the leader of the pack for a long time.

While Mui-mui and Boy-boy had moved to Canada with me and have passed away a couple of years ago, Puppy and Lucky stayed behind when I left Lamma and lived with Bobsy who took over my lease. Puppy passed away peacefully in her sleep back a few years ago. I believe Lucky is still around. She is that timid little dog who tagged along wherever Bobsy goes.

Well, that's the story of my dogs. I also have some favourite dogs on the Island: Morrison(Squinty John's), Harold(Lisa John's). If you remember these 2 pups, you have lived on Lamma for TOO long :)

John Fox's beautiful dog, Jessie swooned whenever she saw him - but he was the most beautiful dog on Lamma - I buried Zorro near him on the Power Station Beach. A sad day - David Slough provided the hearse (like his trolley- Many thanks, Dave!) and Marito and my wife were there. It was heartwrenching 'cos he was such a wonderful companion and I still to this day remember him.

Remember - a dog is for life.

Yes, I remember John's dog, Champagne. I think he was the most elegant dog on the Island.

If anybody wondered what bbchris' mysterious remark above meant, while she didn't want to elaborate what FREE meant:
Here's an email from the man himself, having moved back to California recently. He replied to the "Happy 1st Birthday to Lamma.com.HK!" e-zine I sent him:

Hunter Wallof {L_WROTE}:
Hi; Happy Birthday;

This is Hunter just wanting to say I haven't forgotten you and I'm still planing to e-mail you some good photos of my old house, but due to the high cost of scanning and the fact that Willow and I are having a difficult time adjust to life in this crazy country (wish I'd gone back to Lamma Island instead of California) I haven't gotten it together yet.

Good luck to you and all my good friends on Lamma;
Love Hunter&Willow

P.S. I think I've found a new headline for the next Lamma-zine (see bold text above).

What's this....a thread on Hunter ....dogs' names mentioned...but not Hunter's Rufus?

I've never lived on Lamma, but I had befriended a few dogs there in my time. Of them all, Rufus was by far my favourite. A Russian wolfhound by pedigree and ex-RSPCA , he certainly made for an excellent companion to his look-alike Hunter!

Rufus and I got along well, ...it always lifted my spirits to see him. He was so playful and energetic, and I used to love throwing a tennis ball for him to fetch along the beach.

Tragically, I heard (from some Lantau people) that Rufus died in the Phillipines, having jumped off the junk he misjudged the dinghys position or the dinghy had moved, and cracked his ribs on the side of the small boat. He bled to death internally. I hope that it was just so much rumour.

And just how a dog bred for the steppes and forests of Russia should end up on a Chinese junk with a Californian hippy living on Lamma shall always remain a mystery.

Drifter,
It's funny that you're mentioning Rufus,
we were just talking about him yesterday in the Island Bar, when somebody was remembering Hunter and his slightly orange complexion.

He thought that, as a fruitarian, Hunter was eating too many mangoes and other orange fruits, maybe even feeding his dog mangoes!
Any truth to that? Was Rufus a fruitarian as well?

Lamma-Gung,

Rufus would eat some fruit if nothing else was available, otherwise he was fed dry dog food by Hunter. Like most dogs (and his master) he was a good scavenger and would scoff any discarded meat that he might have found on the street.

Hunter told me that he had once tried to make his own dried dog food but Rufus did'nt like it!
