Obviously these guys think they've got a slice of Lan Kwai Fong and think they can do the same as there; throw out the people who made it what it is, triple the rents and retire to their yacht marina.

Though I don't get how rebuilding the Mr Kebab site is such a hot idea: It's already the standard 3-storey "village house" size, so why would a new building really be worth more?

And all this gentrification, the destruction of local businesses for the benefit of absentee landlords, is being done using laws specifically created to preserve the traditional village way of life. But I'm pretty sure the representatives who are supposed to uphold these values and act on behalf of the people who live here will not have any problems with it.

Next to go - Pizza Milano. They are out on the 5th July according to someone in Deisel's last night who'd just picked up a pizza. Lammagung, can you verify?

Over the past few years, I've seen many campaigns to improve ferry services so that it is more convenient to get to Central (and also have late night services).
Now it appears we are reaping the rewards of making Lamma more attractive to the "suits" (together with commensurate wages and allowances) etc. who are migrating here in droves.
Is it any wonder that people see the opportunity of making a "fast buck" - this is HK after all.
Welcome to the real world

As if the Sewage project hadn't created enough chaos and disruption! Do they really think that people would flock to a building site?

Confirmed by official sources: "Private property! Nothing can be done to stop these redevelopments after Lands Dept. approves them."

Which sources? In the Lands Department?

The Pizza Milano and old Spicy Island (with its skeletons) buildings represent quite a bit of contemporary Lamma history, and diversity too, and it will be sad to lose them and possibly their ethnic culinary services as well.

The remaining old village house on Main Street, which was left abandoned before resuming use as a government-backed community gallery and later as Diesel's is, however, a local heritage attraction on its own right. It really ought to be refurbished and kept as a reminder of Lamma's past era as a simple fishing village for future generations.

Are any locally owned businesses going under from these redevelopments, or are they all foreign-owned? Diesels, Pizza M, Mr Kebab ...

One more objection from a Diesel's regular, making some good points:
{L_QUOTE}:
Firstly, the current buildings located on this site are historical architectural examples, which offer the community a priceless heritage value. The building was previously believed to be a temple as well. On the Yung Shue Wan Main Street, it is the oldest standing structure and a landmark for the entire island and community.

Furthermore, as a building with distinct and rare architecture, only observed because of its location and unique history, it provides an invaluable tourist and historical value that must be cherished and preserved. As a testament to its worth, it is the subject of attention for many photographers, visitors to the island and it dwarves even the local Tin Hau temple in scale - and possibly even in age.

Additionally, its current use as a social gathering place fostering community togetherness is another compulsive factor why such heritage must not be destroyed senselessly.

There are plenty of open, available and more suitable spaces for ugly, uninteresting and meaningless residential village houses to be built. There is no point in demolishing a standing testament to history for those purposes.

plus one more objection for Mr Kebab's redevelopment:
{L_QUOTE}:
...worried that a full scale redevelopment will:

1. Create a huge amount of waste that may lead to further dumping on the island. We have already witnessed an increase in dumping on agricultural land on Lamma. Notably a recent redevelopment of a building on Main Street resulted in dumping on a lily pond and area where Romer's tree frogs, a protected species, had been sighted. While we alerted the relevant departments and presented papers to Legco, it seems that nothing can be done because of loopholes in the law. These incidences of dumping are causing a great deal of distress in our community and contributing to the general degradation of our living environment. What guarantees can be made that the proposed redevelopment of Lot no. 1693 in DD3 LM will not result in further dumping?

2. Create safety and congestion problems. The building in question is on a very busy part of Main Street. As such the building site will need to be managed with great care. Will the redevelopment require that the path be closed at certain times?

3. Possible conflict with a neighbouring HAD project. We understand that HAD is intending to renovate the well area that is adjacent to the building and put in benches. Any building work may damage this work. There should be co-ordination between the owner of the site and the HAD works team.

4. Loss of livelihood. The redevelopment of the building will not only cause loss of business for the existing tenants but also impact neighbouring businesses. Dust and noise problems are a major concern. Measures should be taken to mitigate these problems and the neighbouring restaurants and shops should be consulted. We have spoken to the next door shop today and they were unaware of the notice.

5. Visual impact. The building stands at the centre of the village. It is a natural meeting point and as such has a major visual impact. While the current state of the building is woeful, it is hoped that renovations could be undertaken that would make the building attractive and ensure that it is in keeping with the natural environment of which it is a part. Should the owner wish to discuss this further, Living Lamma has architects and designers among its membership who would be happy to contribute ideas. An attractive building would be an asset to the village and in turn provide the owner with more value.

We wonder if it is possible to renovate the building, rather than have a full-scale redevelopment?

If a redevelopment is necessary, can we ensure that the points raised above are addressed before permission is given for the work to be undertaken with written commitment from the owner on what measures will be taken to mitigate these problems.

Last month Emily's Ice-cream and Gary's second-hand shops (same unit) had to close, although it was due to rental pressure rather than redevelopment.

Nevertheless, these are (well, were) all places which gave Yung Shue Wan some of that diverse, interesting vibe.

Character, it seems, has now become surplus to requirements...

In regard to Mr. Kebab, It was always the case that the building was going to be pulled down due to its age. When the current tenants took over and refurbished they were aware that this was the case and the agreement was that they would have the first right of refusal when it was rebuild and as part of the agreement they could have the design as they wanted it…

So ... Mr Kebab can tell the owner to get stuffed?

Just saying that I find it unfortunate that the theme of this discussion began centered on the bar and its patrons rather than saving a remaining piece of Yung Shue Wan's heritage in a way that is acceptable both to the owner and the community.

Businesses sometimes relocate or close and Lamma's commercial scene may over time lose its attractive diversity, but once a popular traditional landmark is razed down and replaced by another uniform three-storey wall jutting from the Main Street, the landmark and its character are gone forever.

(wing hung company), is the guy infront of Man Kee I think.... I'll get some crazy glue, and glue my fat but to the sliding door. Nobody takes a burger and fries away from a starving Calgarian-Lamma dude. That's like taking a Cheeto away from Beach the dog, I love feeding her Cheetos, and petting her.

Anyways, Ok you devleopers with the dark Blues brothers agent smith glasses, and suit. (Like on the movie Up by Pixar). First you close down my Ice cream, then you close down my only source for Calgarian like burgers, and Pizza, but I'm broke all the time so I can't get the pizza so I get the burger). and no I'm not going to keep eating at that late night noodle house, although they're a nice bunch.... Taking a burger from a young man, is like taking away Mr Nick's joy .

And when this is all over then I get to live in a Castle, you know which one......when they lock me in the nut house for crazy gluing my shirt and pants and doing the bug on a windshild move while saying nooooooooooooooooooooooo in slow motion when the wrecking ball comes. But this Mr Kabab don't they have th tear down a apartment block for that. As for

As for Desiels' I wondered is that an old temple or something? It seems to share the same stucco glossy design as the Temple by the ball courts, and the majong place. But in anycase, I've been watching lots of Kung Fu Gerngshi movies, I'll just fly from Kebabs and back again, back and forth, and the demolition crew will like get dizzy and their eyes will bounce around back and forth like Moody eye's, from Harry Potter.

It seems that it was only a 3-month notice from the landlord who's taking the place back. So they'll still be open till Oct 5.

But I need to verify that when having their great Italian crostini next time. Their (probably very nice) $100+ pizzas have always been above my usual food budget.

A similar photo by Harry Harrison was posted in the Pizza Milano forum a few days ago. OK, back to Diesel's, the topic of this thread....

This would have been another great potential location for Diesel's to move to when they'll have to shut down due to redevelopment probably sometime next year. It would have been so ironic if Diesel's would move to the old Deli.

The search for a new location for Diesel's continues as there seems to be little chance left of saving the current location, unfortunately.

In the meantime, Diesel's is THE place to be seen and have a great time these days, it seems. It was probably the biggest and best typhoon party in the village last night, according to eyewitnesses (not sure about their late-night reliability, though) and the pictures circulating on Facebook!
Not all of Diesel's outdoor furniture seems to have survived the wild party....
